Menu: la maestria ai fornelli di Theo Penati, il servzio di Elior , il sostegno degli sponsor innanzitutto Nessi e Majocchi,Vini La Costa, Cascina Ronchetto, Union Cafe, Spreafico, Panificio d'Onofrio e tutte le aziende che hanno omaggiato premi per la lotteria e poi l'asta. Banditore d eccezione uno squisito e simpaticissimo Valerio Staffelli con le maglie di Pirlo Zanetti e Valentino Rossi e 2 tapiri. Decisiva per il menu la generosita dei 120 ospiti. E cosi sono stati raccolti piu di 20000 € : il valore dell arredamento di 3 camere.

I opted to order the Menu della Campagna (the Land Menu) which featured dal Pescatore's best known classics (aka simple, traditional Mantuan cuisine).

 

The interesting thing to note about the menu at dal Pescatore is that its cover changes every year. The significance is that it is based on a painting that Antonio chooses from the collection that is featured on the restaurant's walls. I found it neat to be able to look around to see all these pieces of art that have inspired some of the beautiful covers (many which are featured on the restaurant's website or on the back cover of the current menu) - it was almost like a built in activity while waiting for subsequent courses.

 

This year's cover is entitled "Runate" by Giovanni da Busnago (1963); the wine list in the back was also the 1998 cover and a piece by A. Fusco.

This is the reason why the 50mm is not ideal for taking pictures of menus at restaurants. Only a few lines are actually readable, and this was at f/3.2.

APTE's crunchy-edged banana bread - when you eventually find it under a mound of stewed rhubarb and honeyed labna - is sweet, sticky and loaded with coconut, while the ricotta hotcakes are plump, light and golden and served with poached fruit and a ricotta flavoured with orange zest.

IN OTHER cafe news, Alphington's APTE, recently named Delicious magazine's cafe of the year in a popular vote, has been sold. Nathan Toleman, who with his wife Sarah Foletta opened the former milkbar three years ago, said the couple would be handing over the reins at the end of the week to an unnamed buyer new to hospitality.

 

The pair has another project on the boil, a cafe that will be similar to APTE, this time on the Carlton/Brunswick border. They hope to open around July.
