When I started working on the menu design for Siena Bistro — a real Italian fine dining restaurant in San Jose — I wanted to create more than just a list of dishes. I wanted to tell a story. A story about Italy, about art, about timeless beauty, and of course, about food made with heart.
The hands I drew were inspired by Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam — one of the most powerful and recognizable masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. I reimagined the image in a modern, stylized way to connect the past and the present. These hands aren’t just a decorative element — they symbolize the connection between generations, tradition and innovation, art and cuisine. Through them, I also wanted to express the sense of elegance and luxury that reflects the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Italian cuisine, like Italian art, is full of emotion, expression, and history. I wanted to bring that feeling into the layout — to make it elegant and clean, so that the food remains the focal point, while adding a bit of soul through visual details. I arranged each section of the menu with care for readability and visual balance — like a beautifully plated dish that you want to take a moment to admire.
