Memories of grandparents-in-law I never met. We live in their 45-year old house, which we have lovingly renovated ourselves over the past 12 years. These utensils were found in the crawl space. I finally just framed them to put in our kitchen (oh yeah, and it covers up an electrical outlet I hate looking at when I am sitting in the living room). I really like that they are grody and way past their prime. They were practical people and I wish I could have known them.
Complete with bokehvision-la to impress camera club types who prefer to muse over how much you spent on your Leica M9 Hermes edition to your photographic skill with a Box Brownie.

Moving, packing, cleaning...it's the best time to evaluate why you have what you have. Matches are one way to remember a moment in time, a special occasion, a place you frequent...we all hold on to so many things for memories. I thought that I would just scan these guys and then let go. The image of these matchbooks will be enough to trigger the happy memories...
It feels good to let go of stuff...it's just stuff.
These images are part of an exhibit of Jacinda Russell's "Strange Artifacts" at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. Amazing, haunting, beautiful works.
Memory Lapses are temporary installations I photograph to revisit places linked to strong memories, past or recent.
By overexposing reflective material in the process, data becomes absent from the digital file, creating an empty zone in the image that alters reality and distorts our perception : like time and distance do.

These painted cubes are found in the harbour of Llanes, Asturias. The blocks were delivered in the 1930s as a breakwater and storm protection. In 2001 they were decorated by Basque artist Augustin Ibarrola eith images symbolic to the history of the town. They are one of the area's main tourist attractions.
I titled this memories because these plates and amber glasses were passed down to my from my Grandma who passed many years ago..
