We had a quick and simple shoot, and Remwoir was a bit tired after a long day of work. We had a chat and shot a few frames, but it wasn't until I developed and scanned the film a couple of days later that I became absolutely thrilled by these moody, thoughtful images!

The Bird Garden in Mongkok was an odd and photogenic place: a maze of cages (some exquisite. I have a Polaroid I hope to post later) and a tangle of elderly regulars proudly comparing their pet birds' wings and warbles. There is, of course, always a sadness in the forced captivity of free creatures, but there was also an atmosphere of tender affection and a sense of companionship, and I left not knowing what to think.

My daughter - in HK right now - knew exactly what she thought, though. I quote:

"I am so pro animals now that all that stood between me and releasing the birds was that i cant save the elephants from chineze prison."
