A person may escape the warped world that lies indoors, where he is trapped in his own thoughts, but the outside world may be just as chaotic. The man in the photograph is caught between two actions, pausing between within and without. It is not freedom from the walls of building we seek; it is, rather, freedom from the mental/spiritual/emotional walls we build for ourselves.
