Yellow Brick Road pattern by Atkinson Designs.
My husband decided to take a quilting class in 2006, to see if this was something we could enjoy together since he found that he really does like picking out fabrics. He chose all of the fabrics and then was dissatisfied with the finished quilt top because there wasn't enough contrast. It was EXTRA MEDIUM.
I chose to use it as a learning experience for myself as well, and used the first ~185 Free Motion Filler designs on Leah Day's website (www.daystyledesigns.com) to quilt each individual patch differently. It took a lot of time to quilt but I had SO much fun finishing this quilt!
I quilted it using Superior Rainbows trilobal polyester thread in chartreuse green, to match the lightest fabrics on the quilt and give it more contrast. I think that it worked, preventing the overall effect from being quite so "spotty" as it was before quilting.
This quilt will serve as an encyclopedia of free-motion filler designs for me in the future, as I have over 180 different ones in my own personal "handwriting" and know which ones worked easily for me and which ones weren't as successful.
