Afternoon Reading Series: The Novel

Throughout this year's Worlds Literature Festival we enjoyed a set of readings and conversation from participating writers. Hosted by Catherine Cole, this session featured Jon McGregor, Gail Jones, and Manu Joseph - all in front of an audience of Worlds participants and invited guests from University of East Anglia.

The old Santa Fe depot at McGregor, Texas is still in use daily by both the northbound and southbound Amtrak Texas Eagle trains. Today we have stopped for a look around and to hopefully catch a train passing by.

The unique L-shaped depot in McGregor was originally built in 1904, building at the junction of the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe (now BNSF) and the St. Louis Southwestern (Cotton Belt, now Union Pacific) railways. Santa Fe’s logo, a cross inside of a circle, is displayed on the building. The depot still retains its original feel, but the neighboring railroad control tower was dismantled in 1967.

McGregor Springs (the town’s former name) was established in 1882 at the intersection of the railways. The town, which was endowed with artesian springs, was named for Dr. Gregor Carmichael McGregor, who gave the railroad right-of-way to cross his land.

Built in 1884 in the Late Victorian style for E.R. Barron, one of McGregor's most prominent early merchants. The upper floor contained apartments and a "science hall". The building features high-quality brick from the Anderson Press Brick Co. of Chicago on a foundation of McGregor limestone block.

It was here that the McGregor's mustered before the Battle of Culloden. Full of hope, they set off to fight in the last civil war fought on British soil and reinstate their rightful king Bonnie Prince Charles. Few returned, and for those who did, a greater fight was on their hands – to save their religious beliefs from persecution, which followed for more than a century afterwards.

There is a guy on the left. He was drinking a 6 pack and had suitcases with him. It was Boxing Day. He asked me if I was "taking happy snaps". I said yes and got the fuck out of there.

The Luthe building was constructed circa 1886 and later housed a plumbing shop, furnace dealer and antique store. It now houses a retail store specializing in Victorian-era clothing.

The Dawson building was erected in 1860 to house a grocery store, and by 1912 it housed a mortuary and furniture store. In 1939 a fire swept through the building, killing eight persons by inhalation of fumes from the formaldehyde used by the mortuary. The building was then renovated and became a cabinet shop and archery factory and is now an antique store.
