There is a new art trail in Southampton and Winchester this summer. For ten weeks Hares of Hampshire will bring thirty-two large hares and forty-two leverets to the streets, parks, galleries and shops of the two cities.

All money raised by donations and by the auction of the hares at the end of the summer will go to the Murray Parish Trust.

A small lake near Lake Alexandrina. Seemed to be a popular place for camping.

Back together 431 makes its leisurely way thru McGregor with 115 cars and 6023 along with 765 heading for KC. 10-6-92

Serving the local coloured community, The People’s Choice Superette stands on the street that divides the historically white from the coloured part of town. Given the history and the context, there seems to be something unintentionally ironic in the name.

Established in 1861, the small Karoo village of McGregor was originally called Lady Grey. It was renamed in 1905 in honour of the Rev. Andrew McGregor, who for forty years had served as the Dutch Reformed Minister for the area.

The once-sleepy village has become something of a refuge in recent years for those seeking respite from the big city blues, in search of quieter, slower, more creative or adventurous lifestyles. For visitors and weekenders, too, McGregor offers the perfect Karoo getaway, within easy driving distance from Cape Town, yet a world away. Still, the old persists with the new, and the influx of new money can’t wholly hide the inequalities that lurk on the outskirts.

Taken over a ten-year period, between 2012 and 2022, this series of photographs is from a project on South African country villages and towns. Many of the images are of small Karoo towns, and many of these in turn are of the Dutch Reformed Churches whose steeples are visible for miles around in the vast, semi-desert region that lies, metaphorically and geographically, at South Africa’s centre.

There is something about these Karoo towns, in particular, that has always spoken to me - the stillness of the empty streets in the heat of the day, the white, shuttered cottages, the big skies overhead. And always, at the edge of town, or sprawling out into the arid land, the coloured settlement or African location. In South Africa, as elsewhere, as Faulkner wrote, ‘The past is never dead. It’s not even past.’

Making it's way down the town street at Beamish Museum is beautifully restored Fowler tractor 21222, "Wee McGregor", carrying the livery of H.F. Smith & Son of Hexham (Northumberland). It also carries a crest and plaque on the chimney front celebrating Ayr County Council Highways Department, suggesting that it may have previously worked there.

This tractor was built in 1937 and registered CS 5409 (although the front number plate is not present).

The engine was at Beamish as part of the Power from the Past event of October 2019.

Something for a change of subject - The McGregor Museum in Kimberley South Africa started out in 1897 as a Sanatorium. From 1908 to 1933 it was the Belgrave Hotel. View the price document - how things have changed! In 1933 it changed to a Convent School & closed in 1971.

After some changeds it opened as the musuem in 1973, a very interesting place with superb balconies & door (as well as exhibits).

A salute to my friend Kevin Madsen, who just moved out of his long time home in McGregor. Train 158 with A-B-A F9s bangs over the Soo Line crossing and past the McGregor depot on Feb. 11, 1978.

DPUs on a BNSF coal train roll north at McGregor, TX. January 2015.

Built in the 1880's and designed by McGregor architect Elias Jacobs. In the early 1900's it also housed a bowling alley and feed store, as well as a state liquor store. The Masons had their lodge on the upper floors. In the mid-1900's it housed the town's library and community room.
