El día que encontramos a Maya 17 de abril de 2014

On the Sunday walk near home

This is Maya. Her name is a recycled name I used to have for my Soom Rosette Marguerite but since she's been laying low I decided that this girl should be the new Maya. I think the name suits her :3

She's hopefully going to be a centaur lady if the littlefee fits with the HDF centaur body. Now I'm off to give her some eyelashes ~

Roberto Montenegro (Mexican, 1885-1968)

1926. Oil on canvas, 31 1/2 x 27 1/2" (80 x 69.8 cm). Gift of Nelson A. Rockefeller

2009

Like his friend and fellow artist Diego Rivera, Montenegro spent most of the Mexican Revolutionary period studying abroad in Europe. He was a founder of the Mexican Mural Renaissance and, in 1921, was one of four artists commissioned to create the first government-sponsored murals in Mexico City. He is best known for his fusion of a Surrealist sensibility with a deliberately naive folk-art style. In 1934 Montenegro became the first director of Mexico's Museo de Arte Popular (Museum of popular art), and he spent his life championing Mexican folk art. This painting was included in MoMA's vast 1940 exhibition Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art, which included everything from ancient art to the mural Dive Bomber and Tank, which Orozco painted at the Museum in front of the public during the show. Montenegro curated the popular-arts section of the exhibition.

Picture: The magnificent of Maya Bay

Location: Phi-Phi Island, Phuket. THAILAND

Maya Bay is a stunningly beautiful bay that's sheltered by 100-metre high cliffs on three sides. Inside the bay there are several beaches, most are small and some only exist at low tide. The main one is around 200m long with silky soft white sand, underwater colourful coral and fish live in exceptionally clear water; the whole bay is one big reef.

Maya Bay has become the main tourist attraction of Phi Phi since 'The Beach' was filmed here in 1999 (see below for more info about the film). It was always very popular before the film but now people around the world who haven't even heard of Phi Phi have certainly heard of Maya Bay.

You can only visit Maya Bay from November to April, as large waves make the entrance dangerous for boats during the other months of the year.

The bad news; as it's so beautiful and so well known many boats are required to ferry all the visitors in and out. On any given day there will be 30+ speedboats and longtail boats on the beach, with large ferry boats carrying hundreds of snorkelers and sightseers moored in deeper water. Beautiful it is, secluded it isn't - thousands of people visit each day. Try to visit early in the morning or after 5pm and you'll avoid the crowds.

The Beach

'The Beach' by Alex Garland is Penguin Books' best ever seller. The story is about young travellers who dropped out of society and went to live in a hidden lagoon in Southern Thailand.

Fox bought the rights to the book, signed up Leonardo DiCaprio to play the lead role and then searched for a location. Maya Bay was perfect.

Fox decided that the perfect beach needed some palm trees and less vegetation so they rearranged the beach to fit a Hollywood stereotype. Beforehand, environmentalists said removing vegetation would increase the risk of the sand erosion and that the delicate natural ecosystem may not recover. The vegetation was replanted after filming had finished and additional bamboo fences were put in place to support the dunes.

The following year during high tides and a strong storm the dune collapsed, the sand flowed down the beach and killed coral in the sea below. Fox went to great lengths to leave Maya Bay as they found it however the debate still goes on whether the damage was due to the rearranging or not, many say that the replanted vegetation had not yet 'taken'.

Filming commenced in 1999 and 'The Beach' was one of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2000. The film is cited by many tourists as the inspiration for their trip to Thailand.

Facilities in Maya Bay

A small shack a little back from the beach sells drinks and snacks.

Further back from the beach are toilets but you'd only want to use them if you're desperate.

There is no food available here, those who camp must bring their own food. Fires are not allowed but there is a permanent barbeque stand for cooking.

Activities in Maya Bay

Snorkeling is excellent throughout the bay, large underwater boulders are encrusted with coral and brightly coloured fish are numerous. Visability is excellent. Many tour companies bring you here to snorkel from Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi Don.

Sea kayaking is also popular, the kayaking tour boats come into the bay and moor while you explore.

Tour shops in Phi Phi Don have begun to advertise camping on 'The Beach', drinking is usually part of the fun. Currently camping is only permitted on alternate nights.

Getting to Maya Bay

From Phi Phi Don you can rent a longtail for 1,000 baht (US$ 32) for three hours or for 2,000 baht (US$ 64) for a full day, max four people. Speedboats are 3,500 baht (US$ 110) for half day or 6,000 baht (US$ 190) for a full day, maximum six people.

There are also many different kinds of boat tours that take in Maya Bay combined with other sites, various kinds of boats are used, such as longtails, speedboats and ferry boats. Tours are generally priced at around 500-1,000 baht (US$ 16-32), depending on the type of boat used and the duration of the tour. (All prices are 2007)

From Phuket and Krabi tours depart daily, mainly by speedboat.

Maya is a very stubborn kid for things she care. Sometimes, we felt it's so hard to be parents But, she has the most lovely smile I ever wanted. I try to follow her smile to think her way. Finally, we found that she is a very gentle kid.(written by chihwen)

Maya Alleruzzo is the senior photographer at the Associated Press Baghdad bureau. She's been photographing the Iraq war since 2004, when she covered the Battle of Fallujah for the Washington Times. She's got a stunningly good eye. It's humbling to watch her work and see what she creates. Wish I had 1/10th of her talent and drive.

A personal sketch after reading Path Beyond Technology. I won't write my review of the book here, it'd be too lengthy, but it would be a good read ro anyone who has already read couple books on the Mayans.
