Konstanz is a German city in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg located on the southern shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee in German) and bordering Switzerland. It is the largest and most densely populated city of this great lake, the largest in Germany, fed by the Rhine River and shared with two other countries: Switzerland and Austria. The city of Constanza forms a single real urban area together with the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen, surpassing both 100,000 inhabitants.

There is a bridge that divides the city into two zones, under which the Rhine feeds Lake Constance.

In spite of being a small city, its climatology turns it into a tourist destination and it increases remarkably its seasonal inhabitants.

The old town and, therefore, place of maximum interest of the city is on the southern bank of the Rhine, where only this portion of German land surrounded by Swiss territory exists. From the same bridge over the Rhine (Rheinbrücke) that accesses the old town from the north of the city, there are two of the most characteristic monuments of the city: the Pulverturm and Rheintorturm towers, of medieval origin.

More towards the center of the old city, the most important squares stand out, the Markstätte and the Münsterplatz, where, as its name indicates, there is the Cathedral of Our Lady. Inside it is remarkable the original Romanesque crypt, built between 1052 and 1089 and located under the current altar. In the summer months, the 76-meter tower of the building is open to the public and allows a splendid view of the lake. As expected in any European building of these characteristics, the original Romanesque building has important elements and subsequent Gothic and Baroque modifications.

Also on the Münsterplatz are the remains of a Roman fortress, which are perfectly visible by means of a glass pyramid on the floor of the square, at the very foot of the cathedral.

Numerous streets in the historic center of the city, such as the Wessenbergstrasse or the Rosgartenstrasse, have a large number of medieval buildings with beautiful balconies and paintings in which you can read the date of its construction, name or guild. Many of them date from before the 15th century and interesting baroque buildings also stand out among the later ones.

The Wessenbergstrasse, one of the main arteries of the old part of the city, flows into the Hussenstrasse and this in turn into the Schnetztor tower, the main gate of the old city wall, part of which is still preserved, and direct exit towards the city of Kreuzlingen, already in Switzerland, but completely integrated with Constance, with which it forms the same urban nucleus.

The Lion pride in the Seronera area of Serengeti National Park is huge with over 25 members in the pride which includes two males, females and cubs.

Having been with them for sometime during which they where gorging themselves on a Wildebeest kill, they brought down another wildebeest because the herd came too close to them when they came to drink water from the nearby river.

This is the biggest Lioness of the pride who came down to the river also for a drink.

You have surely noticed during your time on Earth that the moon doesn't always look the same. Sometimes you can see it in the middle of the day in a cloudless blue sky. Some nights it is large, round, and bright and illuminates everything. Sometimes the moon is just a sliver of a crescent, and other times you can't see it at all.

These changes in the appearance of the moon can be explained by the lunar cycle. The way we see the moon changes throughout the cycle because its position relative to the earth and sun changes. When the moon is getting smaller every night, we call it is a waning moon.

The Lunar Cycle and the Phases of the Moon

The reason we can see the moon at all is because sunlight strikes it and reflects from its surface. When the reflected sunlight is visible to us on earth, we can see the moon. The percentage of the illuminated moon that we can see depends on how the moon, sun, and earth are all positioned relative to each other. For instance, when you see a full moon, the earth is between the sun and the moon. We can see the entire illuminated surface of the moon, and it looks full and round.

On the other hand, when the moon is between the earth and the sun, the illuminated side is facing away from us and we can't see it at all. We call this a new moon, and it marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle. A lunar cycle takes about 29 days, and the moon works through its different phases as it revolves around the earth.

When the moon is full, it is at its maximum illumination from our vantage on earth. After the full moon, the percentage of the illuminated surface that we can see gets smaller and smaller until it disappears and we have a new moon again. During that period of getting smaller, the moon is called a waning moon. To 'wane' means to get less and less, or to decline.

NASA's Terra satellite passed over Ophelia when it was still a depression at 9:35 a.m. EDT (1335 UTC). But the image provided by the MODIS instrument, or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer that flies aboard Terra, showed that there were strong thunderstorms around the center of circulation and in a thick band east of the center.

At 11 a.m. EST (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Ophelia was located near latitude 31.5 North, longitude 38.3 West. Ophelia is moving toward the southeast near 5 mph (7 kph), and this general motion is expected to continue during the next day or two. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1002 millibars.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.

Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Ophelia is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday, Oct. 12 and is expected to turn toward the northwest.

I was pleased to have a chance to take this photo because I've not been happy with many previous photos I've taken of wildebeests. Primarily, I suppose, because I've tried to take a photo of the entire animal and have not really been able to appreciate the details of the animal's structure or markings. In this photo, the curve of its skull between horns and nose, the texture of its horns and the pattern of its hide is easier to see. Previous photos I've taken have also made it difficult to see its brown eyes against the brown color of its head. And then, of course, there are those *very* long eyelashes...

===============

From Wikipedia: The blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), also called the common wildebeest, white-bearded wildebeest, white-bearded gnu or brindled gnu, is a large antelope and one of the two species of wildebeest. It is placed in the genus Connochaetes and family Bovidae, and has a close taxonomic relationship with the black wildebeest. The blue wildebeest is known to have five subspecies. This broad-shouldered antelope has a muscular, front-heavy appearance, with a distinctive, robust muzzle. Young blue wildebeest are born tawny brown, and begin to take on their adult coloration at the age of 2 months. The adults' hues range from a deep slate or bluish-gray to light gray or even grayish-brown. Both sexes possess a pair of large curved horns.

The blue wildebeest is a herbivore, feeding primarily on short grasses. It forms herds which move about in loose aggregations, the animals being fast runners and extremely wary. The mating season begins at the end of the rainy season and a single calf is usually born after a gestational period of about 8.5 months. The calf remains with its mother for 8 months, after which it joins a juvenile herd. Oddly, rare blue wildebeat can have a glow or luminescent coat during the change of seasons between fall and winter. Blue wildebeest are found in short-grass plains bordering bush-covered acacia savannas in southern and eastern Africa, thriving in areas that are neither too wet nor too arid. Three African populations of blue wildebeest take part in a long-distance migration, timed to coincide with the annual pattern of rainfall and grass growth on the short-grass plains where they can find the nutrient-rich forage necessary for lactation and calf growth.

The blue wildebeest is native to Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Today, it is extinct in Malawi, but has been successfully reintroduced in Namibia. The southern limit of the blue wildebeest range is the Orange River, while the western limit is bounded by Lake Victoria and Mount Kenya. The blue wildebeest is widespread and is being introduced into private game farms, reserves, and conservancies. So, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources rates the blue wildebeest as being of least concern. The population has been estimated to be around 1.5 million, and the population trend is stable.

Fossil records suggest these two species diverged about one million years ago, resulting in a northern and a southern species. The blue wildebeest remained in its original range and changed very little from the ancestral species, while the black wildebeest changed more as adaptation to its open grassland habitat in the south. The most obvious ways of telling the two species apart are the differences in their colouring and in the way their horns are oriented.

In East Africa, the blue wildebeest is the most abundant big-game species; some populations perform an annual migration to new grazing grounds, but the black wildebeest is merely nomadic. Breeding in both takes place over a short period of time at the end of the rainy season and the calves are soon active and are able to move with the herd, a fact necessary for their survival. Nevertheless, some fall prey to large carnivores, especially the spotted hyena.

Wildebeest often graze in mixed herds with zebra, which gives heightened awareness of potential predators. They are also alert to the warning signals emitted by other animals such as baboons. Wildebeest are a tourist attraction but compete with domesticated livestock for pasture and are sometimes blamed by farmers for transferring diseases and parasites to their cattle. Illegal hunting does take place but the population trend is fairly stable and, with some in national parks or on private land. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists both kinds of wildebeest as least-concern species.

Predators:

Major predators that feed on wildebeest include the lion, hyena, African wild dog, cheetah, leopard, and crocodile, which seem to favour the wildebeest over other prey. Wildebeest, however, are very strong, and can inflict considerable injury even to a lion. Wildebeest have a maximum running speed of around 80 km/h (50 mph). The primary defensive tactic is herding, where the young animals are protected by the older, larger ones, while the herd runs as a group. Typically, the predators attempt to isolate a young or ill animal and attack without having to worry about the herd. Wildebeest have developed additional sophisticated cooperative behaviours, such as animals taking turns sleeping while others stand guard against a night attack by invading predators. Wildebeest migrations are closely followed by vultures, as wildebeest carcasses are an important source of food for these scavengers. The vultures consume about 70% of the wildebeest carcasses available. Decreases in the number of migrating wildebeest have also had a negative effect on the vultures. In the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania, wildebeest may help facilitate the migration of other, smaller-bodied grazers, such as Thomson's gazelles (Eudorcas thomsonii), which eat the new-growth grasses stimulated by wildebeest foraging.

Is there anything more autumnal than a savannah sparrow eating dried-up goldenrod seeds? Let me answer that for you: no.

I also lost 15 minutes of my life looking up whether or not "autumnalty" is a real word (it isn't), which lead down a wikipedia rabbit hole in which I discovered that the word "autumn" itself is possible derived from the lost language of the Etruscan people. Learning is fun! I want to shove myself into a locker so bad right now

Now in 4K! Also, some modifications here and there.

The K50 is intended to replace the Tsar-class, as that design was found to be heavily flawed. However, the good features were borrowed from the Tsar-class, like its bridge that gave an excellent view on the battlespace.

The ship is based on the Pearl battlecruiser's hull, but modified to meet the needs of battleship. This class is supposed to fill out the gap between the said battlecruiser and The Divine superbattleship.

It utilizes many new features that makes it lighter and cheaper. Firtsly, it has only three turret versus the usual four of other nations' battleships while still having the same number of cannons. With one less turret a lot of weight was saved due to less machinery and a shorter citadel, this way more weight could be used for armor. At standard load it has a displacement of 38,230 t.

Armor

The ships' armor protection was designed to break up 16-inch (406 mm) shells from a distance of 15,000–20,000 meters and the primary armor plates made of Krupp cemented armor (which reduces spalling) are backed up by splinter bulkheads intended to contain any shell fragments.

The ship's waterline armor belt is 305 mm (12 in) thick and tapered to a thickness of 100 mm (3.9 in) at its bottom edge; above it is a strake of 229 mm (9.0 in) armor. The main deck armor is 104 mm (4 in). The turrets are protected with an armor thickness of 305 mm on the face, 230–190 mm (9.1–7.5 in) on the sides, and 152 mm on the roof. The barbettes of the second turret is protected by armor 305 mm thick, while the casemates of the 150 mm guns are protected by 37 mm armor plates. The sides of the conning tower are 369 mm (14.5 in) thick.

Propulsion

K50 is equipped with four steam turbines, each of which drove one propeller shaft. The turbines were designed to produce a total of 91,000 shaft horsepower provided by oil-fueled boilers. The ship could carry 5,000 long tons of fuel oil, giving her a range of 10,200 km at a speed of 16 knots. Armament

K50 class' eight 50-caliber 41-centimeter guns are mounted in three turrets, one twin and two triple superfiring turrets fore and aft. Numbered one through three from front to rear, the hydraulically powered turrets give the guns an elevation range of −2 to +35 degrees, giving them a maximum range of 30,200 m. The rate of fire for the guns is around two rounds per minute.

The ship's secondary armament of 12 150 mm guns is mounted in four twin turrets and the remaining in casemates. These guns have a maximum range of 20,500 metres and fired at a rate of six to ten rounds per minute.

These guns are complemented by smaller oness, a dozen multipurpose 107 mm guns in twin turrets. Between the turrets is two twin torpedo launchers to give the ship more versatility.

Anti-aircraft defense is provided by six 84 mm high elevation guns, eight 40 mm guns in two quad turrets and eight 25mm guns, six in twin turrets and two as single mounts.

The Hassan II Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الحسن الثاني, French: Grande Mosquée Hassan II) Casablanca, Morocco. 9345 PhotosMACasablanca 20091230 S 566 Casablan_48

The mosque is located at Bd Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah in Casablanca.

The Hassan II Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الحسن الثاني, French: Grande Mosquée Hassan II) is a mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. It is the second largest functioning mosque in Africa and is the 7th largest in the world.[citation needed] Its minaret is the world's second tallest minaret at 210 metres (689 ft). Completed in 1993, it was designed by Michel Pinseau under the guidance of King Hassan II and built by Moroccan artisans from all over the kingdom. The minaret is 60 stories high topped by a laser, the light from which is directed towards Mecca.[4] The mosque stands on a promontory looking out to the Atlantic Ocean; worshippers can pray over the sea but there is no glass floor looking into the sea. The walls are of hand-crafted marble and the roof is retractable. A maximum of 105,000 worshippers can gather together for prayer: 25,000 inside the mosque hall and another 80,000 on the mosque's outside ground.

Went to spain - and all I had with me were those 3 Sandtroopers. What a pitty... Inspired by some iconic sandtrooper-beach shots from smokebelch (too stupid to give a link but I think you know his great stream)...

On an early morning game drive in Ndutu Plains we came across this lovely Ruppell's Griffon Vulture sitting on a dead tree stump trying to catch the warmth from the early morning sun rays.

Photographed in the Ndutu Plains of Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania.

Just a few more to tide us over, as Daisy and I are not likely to get out much this weekend. What's left of hurricane Ian is rolling through and likely to wander around a bit, so the weekend will be a wet mess. Oh well, there's always next weekend! 😊💗

When all else has failed you can bring your kids here.
