The Sumitomo company, worlds largest processor of raw Titanium, began building their amazing "no expense spared" Commercially Pure Titanium bicycle framesets in the 1980s. These were marketed under their own marque but also commonly sold to other major manufacturers (such as Panasonic, Nishiki, and many others) who re-sold them, badged with their own decals. Countless labor intensive details made these bikes comparatively unprofitable - at least in terms of other products within the huge Sumitomo corporation. So, with the scratch of a pen, the project was abruptly cancelled and any remaining trames and forks were simply placed in storage. After this last stash of frames had later finally surfaced the frames and forks were sold off in bulk to one Japanese and one US shop. I came upon the last of the batch which had been grabbed by the US merchant and bought this frameset new-old-stock and lacking any final decals, in 2003.

Unfortunately, this photo was taken on an overcast day, so the dazzling reflective shimmers of the polished finish (very rare on any TI bike) are not seen in this photo. With the combination of a mirror finish and welds which are also remarkably finely finished, this tends to look like an old fillet-brazed and nickel plated bike. And, the tall head tube and steep frame with traditional narrow diameter frame tubes enhances this illusion. Everything, yes, EVERYTHING! on this frameset is titanium... forged horizontal dropouts (complete with adjuster screws), fork tips, fork crown, brake bridge, seatpost binder, even the cable guides, bottle cage bosses, shifter bosses and chain hanger. Naturally, Sumitomo Titanium Corporation had also manufacturered all their own seamless pure TI tubing for the frame, fork, stays and even the steering tube.

This model was originally intended to be built up with a full Dura-Ace gruppo and these frames were among the first to offer 130 mm spacing - to accommodate the worlds first 8-speed hubs (Dura-Ace), which debuted in 1989. I built up this bike as a "restoration" with complete (mostly n.o.s.) correct Dura-Ace components to reflect a pre-STI bike from circa 1989-90, including the last of the single pivot brakes and the last D-A aero levers. Also seen here are a fluted D-A seatpost and unique "hidden bolt" quill stem - both of which were actually produced for Shimano by Nitto. Other components seen here include a Nitto handlebar, Brooks "Swift" TI rail saddle, stainless steel bottle cage and cheap SPD pedals (in place of the correct early Look licensed Dura-Ace pedals... the ones which Lance Armstrong always preferred. Tires are Michelin clinchers from the 1990s and the semi-aero rims are gray-green because of their ultra-hard anodized finish.

The ride is very different from modern TI alloy bikes which are designed for much greater stiffness - as is the desirable norm for a modern racing bike. This rides more like a light French racing bike from the 1970s, and I think it even has the compliant almost "springy" ride of a much longer wheel base touring bike - yet with fast handling of a racing bike. One of my favorite bikes for long hours in the saddle. A beautifully constructed bike in every way. Frame is 59 cm (c-t) with a 56 cm seat tube (c-c) giving this a main triangle similar to a classic Randonneur bike... and a great fit for my rather short torso.

Read more about this bike, see more detailed photos, and in fact you can see everything which I have discovered about these bikes and about the Sumitomo Titanium Corporation :

Worn with strap from Apartemento magazine

Our big boy Max is a gentle giant, always willing to please, alert to our desires. Our female, Kassie, lives under the misconceived notion that she was born a princess in a canine body. I think I could write a book based on our 6 years of living with her on "How Not to Let Your Dog Get the Upper Hand". Too late for us, but perhaps of benefit to someone else. Amazingly, Max, my husband and I have all fallen victim to her claims of royalty. She rules the household and we conduct ourselves as her willing servants!
