with the further mathematicians breed there are jokes that should be known... and this is one of them...

A while ago I was asked by the excellent band Maths to design a t-shirt for them. Here it is. They wanted to move away from trees and roots, which they'd been using a lot in their artwork. Clearly the next logical step is mountains and sinking battleships.

in fifth grade, i won a state math award. i also had to take the PSAT that year, that sucked. in middle school, i was one of those kids who had to be shuttled to the high school for math courses. i pretty much kicked the math sections' ass on the ACT then got a perfect score on the IL Prairie State (granted the Prairie State exam is a JOKE. Ex: "Billy has 2 dollars in quarters. He buys gum for 50 cents. How many quarters does he have left?" AND THEY LET YOU USE A CALCULATOR. yet, some people still didn't meet "state expectations". what in the world?!?)

moral of the story: i have always hated math, yet it's always been my best subject. that's what i like to call irony.

At Casey Elementary School on Camp Casey Jan. 14, students and parents take part in the school's second annual Math Madness workshop, which aimed to build math proficiency by using games and other activities to make the subject enjoyable for youngsters. In one of those activities, for example, competing groups had to use 20 strands of uncooked spaghetti and about a yard of masking tape to create the tallest possible structure that would support a marshmallow for at least 30 seconds without collapsing. - U.S. Army photo by Pfc. So that's when the rot set in! We never had anything like that when I was doing O level Maths. Small wonder there's a whole generation now incapable of doing even the simplest of sums without a calculator!

This is my first challenge for Project Quilting Season 11. With the theme of math, I immediately thought of paper piecing because of it's precision, order and numbering. I found this simple mountain pattern (triangle) and worked it into a pillow cover.

Math isn't much more pleasant outdoors, but it helps.

Unlike the previous type of sheets, these were used mainly in lessons. They were used with a lower group of Year 8 pupils who didn't like maths as a rule but were quite keen to find the solution to the sheets. Each completed sheet produced a funny book title, a riddle, a joke or the like.

Though the sheets were used for lower secondary pupils, able top junior children were quite capable of doing several of the sheets.

Once again the ideal would be to find a publisher who would be interested in using the sheets in a photocopiable booklet that could be cheaply produced. There are quite a lot of different sheets as I tended to use one a week.
