Material Systems: Digital Design and Fabrication
Harvard University Graduate School of Design
in collaboration with the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard
February 8 - February 24, 2023
Reception: Wednesday, February 8, 5-7pm
This exhibit showcases the results of the Fall 2022 course Material Systems: Digital Design and Fabrication offered at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). For over a decade, faculty from the GSD have collaborated with the Harvard Ceramics Program to offer an experiential learning opportunity for design students that links research and experimentation in emerging digital technologies with the context of ceramic material systems. The course combines technological developments relating to the way in which things are designed (digital modeling, simulation, generative design, etc.) and the way things are made (automation, computer-controlled equipment including robotics, advanced materials, etc.) in search of new opportunities. Each object exhibited here is the result of prototyping and experimentation during the pursuit of a research question – it represents a step in a process of exploration, rather than a finished product.
Material: Oxidized sterling silver that mirrors the gritty environment of shooter games
This pendant represents the health bar that is used in many games. The indicator shows the level of health in the form of a cross with an enamel insert. There is also a panel below the cross indicating the health level in the digital form.
All who have played shooter games remember this indicator: the red strip, each time shrinking too rapidly; the red-colored numbers that are so bent on reaching zero. Right now not much health is left - only 5%! Your strength is vanishing fast, and the enemies are approaching from all sides… BUT you plug in the only remaining key, you open the ultimate door, and you find the last Medipack – YOU are the winner! And now you can start again – this time at the next level!

For a whole week artist and metalworker Helen Carnac used the Institute of Making as her studio and created thoughtful enamel pieces. Members joined Helen to explore and play with enamel – finding out how to use the Makespace enamel kiln, discovering the instant gratification of firing vitreous porcelain on copper, and considering the nature of mark making through the process of sgraffito.

It was quite nice except they were made in advance and contained mayo. What a great way to get food poisonning... Fries were great but the salad was nicer.
