In 1987, while under BATUS ownership, Field's State Street store underwent significant restoration. In 2004, while Field's was still owned by Dayton Hudson/Target, another extensive restoration of the landmark State Street store, costing $115 million, was begun; the last of the renovation was completed after the May acquisition. The 2004 renovations included the installation of new lower-level shops, removal of steel grates from the upper portions of the store's historic light wells, and the addition of an eleven-story atrium in what had been an alley and mid-store light shaft.

Yes, I know the store is now Macy's. And daresay I like Macy's? It took a little getting used to, but I accepted Macy's.

But the clocks will always be Marshall Fields. They were Fields' emblem and even today, Macy's sells commemorative Marshall Fields merchandise with the clock. Periodically the Frango Mint candy boxes will have the clock on the box.

The clock was designed by the firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst and White. It is made of 7¾ tons of cast bronze and hung by ornamental ironwork projected several feet from the building.

The face of the clock is 46" across, the minute hand is 27" and the hour hand is 20½" long.

Compare and contrast this to the clocks at Pittsburgh's famous Kaufmann's Department Store. www.flickr.com/photos/52209513@N03/9266665244/in/photolis... Both Fields and Kaufmanns had two clocks on their flagship stores. Both were landmarks, symbolic of their stores. Both were used as convenient meeting places. Both Marshall Fields and Kaufmanns ended up in the Macy's chain. Unfortunately, Macy's closed the Pittsburgh store in 2015. It will be converted to office, condo, and retail space but the clocks will remain.

"The evolution of the Walnut Room on State Street in Chicago began when a member of our millinery department brought homemade pot pies for her clients so they would not go hungry while shopping. A few years later, her pies became the central offering of the tea room. Demand called for more space, and in the late 1890s the very first restaurant in a department store was opened. The Walnut Room, the grande dame of our seventh-floor restaurants, soon grew to 17,000 square feet, with Circassian wood imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers contributing to its elegance and comfort." ~ Marshall Field's (Now Macy's) On State Street, Chicago

Each year, the downtown Minneapolis Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's and Dayton's) has put on a tremendous Christmas display on the 8th floor. Every year is a different them. The 2007 theme was The Nutcracker. I suggest going early, and getting a gingerbread cookie upon exiting.

Macy's. Minneapolis, Minnesota.

As much as Macy's would like it, there are some of us who will never, ever forget our beloved Field's and its dark green bags with gold lettering.

Sadly, Minneapolis' annual SantaLand display appears to have come to an end. For many years, the Dayton's department store was a Christmas tradition in the Twin Cities--the 8th floor being home to a display which changed themes on a yearly basis. Since transitioning to Macy's, the display has remained the same (A Day in the Life of an Elf). However, the iconic building was recently sold, bringing an end to the historic department store along Nicollet Mall and its festive display.

During the openhousechicago tour I visited the State Street Marshall Field's store where they took us on a visit to the old board room. It has an interesting story dating back to England in the 1600's. However, visually, I thought the atrium was a better image so I wandered up to the furniture department to take this shot.
