Each year, the downtown Minneapolis Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's and Dayton's) has put on a tremendous Christmas display on the 8th floor. Every year is a different them. The 2007 theme was The Nutcracker. I suggest going early, and getting a gingerbread cookie upon exiting.

Macy's. Minneapolis, Minnesota.

As much as Macy's would like it, there are some of us who will never, ever forget our beloved Field's and its dark green bags with gold lettering.

Sadly, Minneapolis' annual SantaLand display appears to have come to an end. For many years, the Dayton's department store was a Christmas tradition in the Twin Cities--the 8th floor being home to a display which changed themes on a yearly basis. Since transitioning to Macy's, the display has remained the same (A Day in the Life of an Elf). However, the iconic building was recently sold, bringing an end to the historic department store along Nicollet Mall and its festive display.

During the openhousechicago tour I visited the State Street Marshall Field's store where they took us on a visit to the old board room. It has an interesting story dating back to England in the 1600's. However, visually, I thought the atrium was a better image so I wandered up to the furniture department to take this shot.

From a Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine I found in my stash from April 24, 1988.

In 1988, Marshall Field's was still owned by BATUS (British American Tobacco). Two years later it would be sold to Dayton Hudson (Target).

I had my compact digital camera with me the other night when I walked to the CTA Blue Line to head home. As I passed by the State Street Macy's, I shot some video of the holiday windows.

Is it just me, or do this year's holiday windows suck the big one? Being an adult isn't the reason these displays disappoint me. I seriously doubt these relatively static, uninspired "Fraggle Rock" things would appeal to any child.

I'm not the only one who thinks the windows blow chunks this year. Writing in The Huffington Post, Mike Doyle declares, "Macy's State Street has cost-cut its Chicago Loop holiday windows and Christmas tree so deeply this year, I personally don't believe it's worth bothering to make that time-honored family foray downtown to see them."

Perhaps the real problem is that Marshall Field's was always something special, but Macy's is really nothing more than just a store.

These scans come from my rather large magazine collection. Instead of filling my house with old moldy magazines, I scanned them (in most cases, photographed them) and filled a storage area with moldy magazines. Now they reside on an external harddrive. I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history.

Please feel free to leave any comments or thoughts or impressions... Thanks in advance!
