The State Street side of Marshall Field's (now Macy's State Street) was designed by the firm of Daniel Burnham and Company in 1902 and 1907. Marshall Field's is on the National Register of Historic Places #78001123, and is also a National Historic Landmark.

It would also be nice if they had a lunch counter again, like they used to when I was growing up, but that would be asking too much.

From what I understand, though, they now have -- a sushi bar!? I guess a cheeseburger deluxe with grilled onions and a chocolate milkshake is out of the question.

Each year, the downtown Minneapolis Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's and Dayton's) has put on a tremendous Christmas display on the 8th floor. Every year is a different them. The 2007 theme was The Nutcracker. I suggest going early, and getting a gingerbread cookie upon exiting.

Macy's. Minneapolis, Minnesota.

One thing that I hadn't done yet during the Christmas season when it came time for Christmas evening (not in the drunk tank as my favorite holiday song puts someone) was stop by and see the Macy's theme.

On DILO, I was very near to the Macy's but the crowds scared me away a bit.

The good thing about going downtown on Christmas each year is that while there are still people out, there are not throngs blocking the windows.

This year's theme in the Macy's window was "The Nutcracker."

Even though it was Christmas, the suite was playing at full volume and since there was no sound competing with it, it could be heard over a block away.

Built in 1907, this is just a portion of the Tiffany ceiling on the 5th floor of Marshall Fields.  Containing over 1.6 million pieces of glass it is the largest example of Tiffany Favile glass in the world.  It is incredibly beautiful to see in person.

We have a video of this mosaic posted on ChiTownView.

Inside the old Marshall Field's building, now occupied by Macy's, you find this beautiful work of art. The glass mosaic dome was designed by Louis C. Tiffany, built by a group of 50 craftsmen that took 18 months completing work in 1907. It is both the first dome to be built in favrile iridescent glass "Favrile" means handmade and the "iridescent effect" was obtained by mixing different colors of glass while hot. "Favrile iridescent glass" is a type of art glass patented in 1894 by Louis Comfort Tiffany. It contains over 1.6 million pieces making it the largest glass mosaic of it's kind.

The mosaic is located near the Washington entrance near the escalators. If you want a closeup look go to the fifth floor in the lingerie department. If you enjoy the work of Tiffany and or art glass there are two more examples within a block's walk. There is an amazing collection of stained glass panels, including some designed by Tiffany in the underground pedway just outside Macy's basement on the north end of the store. Right near InFields bar and grill. Where they have $5 drink specials everyday. youtu.be/AP1qp85U2qA

Then if you go a half block east of Macy's you'll find the Cultural Center. Where you will find another Tiffany masterpiece the world's largest stained glass dome. youtu.be/FKikzrrGUiI

This elegant building in downtown Evanston, Illinois was home to a Marshall Field's department store from 1929 until 1986, when it closed. At the time it opened, it was the second suburban branch of the flagship State Street store in Chicago. After changing hands several times, Marshall Field's became Macy's in 2006. The first floor of this building now contains a Panera Bread store.
