I think I can safely say that this is my favorite Japanese Maple tree...ever. I have taken my fair number of photos of this tree, much like many others. I really like the contrast between the orange and the green, makes me think of a volcano erupting. Once again, this is Fuji Velvia. I have been going through some of my old slides and decided to share this one from last Fall.

Maple burning bright

In the darkness of my dreams

Was starving and just about to eat lunch, when I saw the Japanese maple glowing in sunlight out back. Couldn't get out there fast enough to take some pics!

When I went to pick up my nice piece of black acrylic the other day, I saw this lovely little sugar maple leaf on the parking lot. I rescued it from nasty car tiresand careless feet and brought it home. Sugar maple is the leaf used on the Canadian flag, for folkses who did not know. They SHOULD be much more colourful and quite a bit bigger but with such a dry summer and last winter, they are neither big enough nor bright enough but this one is pretty and I am glad I saw it!

Fall in full colour on your street.

There's a big broadleaf maple like the one in the background here behind our house. I couldn't guess its dimensions, but it is enormous. Technically it is in our neighbor's yard, but since it towers over and is much older than all of us it's more like we belong to it, a feeling I particularly experience in the fall, when it creates the most epic cleanup responsibilities. We often hear barred owls in it at night. Somehow we have never laid eyes on them, but I expect it is just a matter of time. We see all other kinds of daytime birds in it, of course. Cooper's hawks like to hunt in it and it is a popular place for racoons to spend the day before raiding our pond at night. All of the other very big trees nearby are firs, and I think the combination of evergreen and deciduous habitat, as well as the nearby greenbelt and wetlands, all play a role in the extraordinary suburban birding around here. This is from the owl family down the bicycle path. Barred owl, Olympia, WA.

It's fall in Central Park.

My aunt gave me this Japanese Maple. I like to post pictures every so often so she can see how it is doing. Taken April 22, 2008.

I would print this as my home wallpaper :D

When we moved here 25 years ago, there wasn't a tree in the back yard. My dad dug up a maple sapling off his property and brought it to us. We planted it and watched it struggle to survive and then thrive becoming a showpiece of our yard. Dad will be gone 10 years in April but his tree lives on in his memory. Thanks Dad!

I was sitting watching birds when I realized that watching this tree as the sunlight caught the leaves was even better.
