Hardier than the Japanese maples, which are also often fiery-colored in fall, is the Korean maple, Acer pseudosieboldianum, a nice small tree for cold-zone gardens.

The Paperbark Maple Tree is a low growing deciduous tree. The common name is Paperbark Maple. It has a unique texture seeing as many trees do not have paper-like bark. They live for many years and have a medium texture. They will grow to be 20 feet tall. The leaves change color due to season and fall off during the winter. It is native to central China and has been imported into the United States. This tree blooms year round, and always looks nice because of its cinnamon color. E.H. Wilson discovered this tree and it was known all around the world by the year of 1907. It needs sunlight and little water to survive in a dry habitat. Birds are attracted to this specific tree. It's used mostly for shade from the harsh sun. Some fun facts on the paperbark maple tree are :

The cinnamon colored bark makes this tree easy to spot throughout much of the year.

The Morton Arboretum's online collection catalog lists a total of 14 trees with all but one arriving at the arboretum during the 1950's.

The photos on this page are of one of the 4 that are located at the top of Frost Hill. This tree will almost certainly be pointed out to you if you take the tram ride.

Watch for it on the left side of the road just before you begin your descent toward Parking 4.

The flowers of the paperbark maple are yellow-green and appear in the spring.

Photo taken in mid-May. The wings of the samara (fruit) are already obvious, but much of the flower remains.

Flowers are in clusters of 3.

One of our most beautiful fall leaves...

Speckled Tar Spots (Rhytisma punctatum) on Big Leaf Maple Leaves

the maple tree in our back yard always gets the best color

Very few leaves left on the trees here now. I would imagine that this little Silver Maple tree, in Bowness Park, is completely bare, from people removing the gorgeous red leaves to take home, or by Mother Nature herself.

Almost ready to drop its leaves

The colors on the maple leaves really glow when the sunlight filters through them. If you're taking a forest hike these days, take some time every now and then to stop and gaze up into the canopy.
