Es un insecto de tamaño mediano de aproximadamente 4 a 5 cm, con un tórax largo y unas antenas delgadas. Tiene dos grandes ojos compuestos y tres ojos sencillos pequeños entre ellos. La cabeza puede girar hasta 180º. Sus patas delanteras, que mantiene recogidas ante la cabeza, están provistas de espinas para sujetar a sus presas.
Son animales solitarios excepto en la época de reproducción, cuando macho y hembra se buscan para aparearse. Cuando hay más de un macho cerca de una hembra, éstos se pelean y sólo uno se reproduce. Las hembras son mayores que los machos. En raras ocasiones, durante y tras el apareamiento la hembra se come al macho.
Pueden ser de color verde o pardo con distintos matices. El color del adulto lo determina el del medio en el que habita durante su última muda (por ejemplo, amarillo, si se trata de paja seca, o verde, si es hierba fresca).
Es el único animal conocido que cuenta con un único oído, y lo tiene localizado en el tórax.2

A Praying Mantis in my garden this morning. It appears to be in it's praying position with it's "grabbing arms" folded. It was quite happy to just sit there and let me take some pictures.

Hay veces que una cosa puede no ser lo que parece, como puede suceder aquí. Porque una mantis es un insecto de cierto bulto, pero lo que sucede aquí, es que esta es una cría que apareció entre mi mata de hierbabuena, cuatro llegé a ver simultáneamente, de apenas un centímetro de largo (sin contar la antena) y apenas un milímetro de grosor. De vez en cuando miro a ver por donde andan, pero la mata ha crecido mucho y no sé si se se han hecho más desconfiadas y se esconden más o si se han ido.

Y hoy para completar el fin de semana para mi gran sorpresa he encontrado junto a la misma laguna esta pequeña ninfa de Mantis Religiosa (aproximadamente 25mm sin contar las antenas). No me atrevo a pedir más

So, this is a milkweed stem, pretty well finished off by feasting Monarch caterpillars. I was looking for the caterpillars and spotted this miniature Praying Mantis nymph. Honestly, it's no longer than my baby fingernail, and paper thin. I saw another one, same situation different milkweed late the next evening but couldn't find it the next day when I searched.
Just a few technical notes: This creature is so small it was difficult to see if I was shooting the back of the head or the preferred face. Closest I could come here. Did I mention the breeze and light direction? This is cropped a lot, but check it large!
Mantises are an order (Mantodea) of insects that contains over 2,400 species. So far, I've managed photos of six, this common green, a brown, a gold, and four that I can't come near classifying, plus one albino.
This guy was eyeing me as I was trying for the best shot. Those two black dots would move as I did. The eyes are widely spaced and laterally situated, affording a wide binocular field of vision and precise stereoscopic vision at close range. The dark spot on each eye that moves as it rotates its head is a pseudopupil. This occurs because the ommatidia that are viewed "head-on" absorb the incident light, while those to the side reflect it. But whatever the science, it's a little creepy when every praying mantis I've seen has seen and followed me, not because he was afraid, but because he was sizing me up as a potential meal ... or lifetime of meals.
The season has started... this morning we found some specimens. It is very exciting to watch these funny creatures .

Mantis religiosa, comúnmente llamada santateresa, mamboretá, campamocha o tatadiós o simplemente mantis, es una especie de insecto mantodeo de la familia Mantidae. Tiene una amplia distribución geográfica en todo el Viejo Mundo
También llamada Santateresa...El nombre hace alusión a la posición en la que parece que está rezando cuando acecha a sus presas. El color depende del lugar donde se encuentre cuando hace la última muda. La cultura popular en España presenta a la mantis como un animal peligroso, con nombres como Muerte, Caballito del Diablo... cuando es totalmente inofensivo y beneficioso para el hombre. En mi pueblo dicen: " Si te pica una Teresa prepara la caja en la mesa".
Mantis En esta época no deberían verse sin embargo, el otoño tan cálido que estamos teniendo está haciendo que muchos insectos se confundan y crean que es final del verano.
En aquesta època no haurien de veure's no obstant això, la tardor tan càlida que estem tenint està fent que molts insectes es confonguen i creguen que és finals d’estiu.
