Lst summer, weather was oppressive heat and I found a tiny baby mantis on my window. I decided to put regularly big ice cubes in order to provide fresh water. A few months after, this ninja mantis was watching me at the same place, I hope it was the same one...

Muchas gracias por vuestra visita. Many thanks for your visiting

The European mantis (Mantis religiosa) is a large hemimetabolic insect in the family of the Mantidae ('mantids'), which is the largest family of the order Mantodea (mantises). Their common name praying mantis is derived from the distinctive posture of the first pair of legs that can be observed in animals in repose. It resembles a praying attitude.

Il nome del genere deriva dal greco "Mantis", cioè profeta, indovino, e fa riferimento alla postura delle zampe anteriori che ricorda un atteggiamento di preghiera.

Yup, another Praying Mantis. Poor thing got its home terrorized with the snippers before I saw it. A couple of things: (1) I can't say I've seen mantises this late fall / winter like I've seen this season. (2) I've NEVER seen one with that bulls-eye yellow spot on its lower body underside. It's so perfect I'd swear it was painted -- of course it's not.

I'm pretty amazed I got any sharp images with this cutie - it was quite breezy, and it didn't appreciate the bush waving in the wind.

Mantis Shrimp. I took this photo through the glass at the National Aquarium about a year ago, I'm so backed up on photos that I'm just getting around to posting it now.

I didn't have my macro lens with me when I spotted this praying mantis, so nothing special here. It's very heavily cropped, but I wanted to make the photo more abstract.

Praying Mantises are exclusively predatory and their diet usually consists of living insects; larger species have been known to prey on small lizards, frogs, birds, snakes, and even rodents. Most species are known to engage in cannibalism. The majority of mantises are ambush predators, waiting for prey to stray too near. The mantis then lashes out at remarkable speed.

#218/365 This little guy has been living on my bicycle tire for the last 2 weeks. I'm not sure if he(she) hunts at night but I never see him(she?) move. I even found some freshly deseased bees I set up on the tire as an offering. I have a couple clearer shots..but I thought this was the most interesting with the super shallow dof. I used one of those screw on macro lens filter. It makes the dof insanely shallow. The names reminds me of a Harry Potter spell :)
