The Praying Mantis was actively doing a little claw maintenance in this shot - licking off the food remains from a recent kill no doubt. (yuk)

A Preying Mantis showed up a couple of days ago. Only one I have seen this year...

almost stepped on this creature too! I do my best to watch for life where I step and stick to pathways.... rarely do I see a Praying Mantis so this was pretty special!

Bug Boy who is actually a Girl :)

Added to the Macro monday for theme Hobby and the hobby being entomology or it could be Pets :).

Mantis religiosa belongs to the Mantidae family. It is distributed in Southern Europe, but spreading to the North. There are populations in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany). Females are larger than males, but males are more active and able to fly, whereas females' bodies are too heavy to enable them to fly. Their coloration may vary from shades of brown to green and even yellow.

The Missouri Dept. of Conservation says there are three main types of Praying mantis in Missouri: Carolina, Chinese, and European. They can be identified by their egg cases. I have no idea about this one but I know it is fairly 'fresh.' This critter was all of 3/8" (1 cm) long. There were two visible on one Calla lilly plant. They were not bothered by the macro lens or even the tripod.

A single macro image taken handheld with flash at The Liberty Centre, Ringwood, Hampshire. Not as sharp throughout as I would have liked.

Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fav & comment on my image much appreciated.

Mantis + sunset = You know my camera's coming out.

This tiny praying mantis (Mantis religiosa) was patrolling the petals of a purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea.) I'd guess its size at less than 1/2" (12 mm). National Geographic says the order mantises has over 2,400 different species and are found through the globe in temperate and tropical habitats. It did not seem afraid of the camera lens although it would periodically pivot its head and look at it. More than ever I long for the return of my (repaired) E-mount 90 mm macro lens.

I suppose it's the same praying mantis that this summer ... she took her autumn coat: brown, more or less browned according to the light.

Watching this tan colored mantis (with only one complete arm and one antenna) catch and take this bee apart piece by piece was a bit disconcerting. One of the bee's detached legs rests in the sedum in the foreground.

I was in "praying mantis heaven" this morning. There were lots of them at the farm where I rescue kittens. Of the many pics I took, here are some of my favorites.

The name "mantis" comes from the greek word: Prophet or soothsayer. They are a farmer and gardener's friend.

I was down at the beach recently and this tiny fellow was walking along the post and rail fence. He seemed to be more interested in what I was doing and watched my every move. Cute and amusing at the same time. About 15mm long.

Another portrait of my new pal.

European Mantis (Mantis religiosa) in Montana. Not a native species to the United States, but one that has become common in many places. Natural light in the late afternoon.

Photographed in Ifakara, Tanzania

Sorry, I like this insect. In some years I see them often in my hungarian garden in the autumn, in others not a single at the same time of the year, neither in the garden nor out in the field at the dog-walk.
