preying mantis. We've had a preying mantis for several years in the yard. I saw a baby one and it's tiny of course. It's astonishing that it's a killing machine. But it's better than chemicals and that's the nature of Nature. I hope you've enjoyed the picture and thanks for admiring it. I love our backyard birds. Even the red tail hawk which astounds me as to its capacity for patience when hunting. My favorite is the turkey vulture riding on a wave of air. Immense beasts but so agile and free.
This mantis has been hanging out on our driveway. I was crawling on my knees to get eye-level with it. Taken in Harding County, New Mexico, USA.

The photo is baby of mantis who was born about 30 minutes before. The body of baby seems transparent.
I was doing some watering this morning and this mantis popped up most indignant at getting wet. However, it did add a sparkle to his face ;-)
This Mantis had great camouflage It was in the leaves of a large sunflower and it stayed like that without moving for 6 days. It may have been waiting for prey.
Poor little mantis was evidently in my orange tree, which got a water hose shower this morning. Knocked the poor thing to the ground so it's just now climbing back up the trunk of the tree. This wasn't the most perfect DOF I got, but it was the best head turn my way. I love these guys and I haven't really had a sweet encounter all this summer. So this was a real treat.

HAVE A NICE DAY
First identified in Auckland during the late 1970s, the South African praying mantis (Miomantis caffra) has by now become firmly established in New Zealand.
Got a few minutes with this one before it disappeared into the greenery. Balancing the settings to get a decent image was a challenge.
A mantis in my front garden yesterday, with the sky and sun stained by smoke from the Southern California wildfires. Yesterday I posted a silhouette of the same mantis; this image was taken a few minutes earlier with the sun a bit higher, and the mantis lit by fill flash.
Here's a strange find - this is an adult male Bordered Mantis (Stagmomantis limbata) we found last night that had flown to our porch light. There should be no adults here now - not until August, at least, in fact. Did he hatch too soon, last December or January? I have never seen an adult this time of year, and I keep a close eye on my garden critters. Fascinating. Still, while he will most certainly not live long enough to mate, at least he'll get to keep his head. (Btw, the plant is a species of Clarkia, a CA native in my garden.)
