Mallards rise hurriedly at sunrise from the Tennessee River backwaters, Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Limestone County, AL.
This is the sorry state of my car after my brother suffered at the hands of a horrid icy country lane :( Luckily nobody was hurt.

I know this one is some kind of Hawk

Red mangrove seeds are viviparious ('bring forth life'). Mangrove seeds germinate on the tree and as soon as these propagules fall they are 'ready to go' (unless the water takes them away but they are still viable for about 40 days).
I found some more old photos (slides, thank goodness) in an attic room that had been invaded by squirrels.
Thankfully squirrels don't actually like film, so most of them were actually scannable (there are a few more that apparently disintegrated when I cleaned them, because the scans ended up looking like they were in a rainstorm :-( )
These must have been taken in the summer of '73 and just starting out as a trainspotter, because the photo quality is about what you'd expect when you give a cheap plastic kodak to an 13 year old and let them wander off to North La Crosse to look at trains.
Alas, no pictures of the Milwaukee Road's rsc-2ms were in the batch. Probably because they were _always there_ and not interesting and new like the S1, SDP40F, and trains in southern Illinois. Ah well, my memories are a little more durable than these slides (at least until I have a power failure, at which point it all will go *poof*)
This was a seagull. I'm not sure how to classify it now, though perhaps foundimagination can help me out with the scientific term.
Salt, sun, without dreams and without hope, there was nothing else but dying, go back to the beginning and vanish to the sea again...
The effort is nice to have the plaques in Chinese, English and Japanese (!), but should get a copy edit.

El Ministerio de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible adelanta un trabajo de campo en los territorios, encabezado por el viceministro de Ordenamiento Ambiental, Nicolás Galarza, quien visitó Santa Marta para conocer las acciones adelantadas por la Corporación Autónoma Regional del Magdalena (Corpamag) en pro del desarrollo sostenible de la región. Así, la entidad nacional apoya el trabajo realizado por la autoridad ambiental departamental.
Corpamag hace una restauración pasiva de bosques de mangle en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, a través del mantenimiento de caños que alimentan de agua dulce la reserva, intervención que ha mostrado resultados positivos según reportes del Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras José Benito Vives de Andréis (Invemar).
“En la década del cincuenta había en la Ciénaga cerca de 52.000 hectáreas de mangle, y para el año 1994 solo quedaban 17.000 hectáreas; hoy tenemos casi 40.000 como resultado de las inversiones hechas en la recuperación de la dinámica hidráulica de la Ciénaga, con el apoyo esencial del Ministerio de Ambiente y del Gobierno Nacional”, afirmó Carlos Francisco Díaz-Granados, director general de Corpamag.
La Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta sufrió serias afectaciones ambientales por intervenciones de infraestructura realizadas en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. “El trabajo del Sistema Nacional Ambiental, de la mano de Invemar, de la Corporación y del Gobierno Nacional ha construido un plan de recuperación que está dando resultados y es fundamental por los servicios ecosistémicos que presta. El Gobierno del presidente Iván Duque está comprometido con la recuperación de la Ciénaga para que las nuevas generaciones disfruten de este paraíso en todo su esplendor”, sostuvo el viceministro.
Galarza también recorrió el vivero bioclimático ubicado en el Batallón Córdoba. Este fue entregado por Corpamag en septiembre de 2020 y su propósito es repoblar con especies nativas sectores aledaños, en especial la ronda hídrica del río Manzanares y zonas del ecosistema de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, impactadas negativamente por incendios. Además, en esta instalación se plantarán árboles frutales y maderables. Se espera que la primera producción sea de entre 3000 y 3500 plantas. / Feb. 07, 2021. Each morning I set a 5 gallon pail in the crock that is half full of sand and cut up enough mangles and beets to fill it. All of the animals except Dolly have learned to eat them. It gives them something fresh and crispy. Some of the mangles have the prettiest rings on the inside.
Cogs! I love cogs. These remind me of lock gates. Cog-shaped things that are actually buttons are even better than the real thing.
