OHCR 4030 takes Melvin empties towards Wilmington as they hook a turn off the former main to Parkersburg and on to the branch towards Columbus. With an old school K5 blaring, there was a brief moment of serendipity, and just for a moment, it was 1984 on the Ohio Division once again.

This little house finch has been visiting our backyard feeder for the past month. She has a mangled left foot but seems to be doing quite well in spite of it. Day 10 of 365.

Rhizophora mangle, known as the red mangrove, is distributed in estuarine ecosystems throughout the tropics. Its viviparous "seeds," in actuality called propagules, become fully mature plants before dropping off the parent tree. These are dispersed by water until eventually embedding in the shallows.

As a viviparous plant, R. mangle creates a propagule that is in reality a living tree. Through resembling an elongated seed pod, the fully-grown propagule on the mangrove is capable of rooting and producing a new tree. The trees are hermaphrodites, capable of self-pollinating or wind-pollinating. The tree undergoes no dormant stage as a seed, but rather progresses to a live plant before leaving its parent tree. A mangrove propagule may float in brackish water for over a year before rooting.

IORY 2134 and OHCR 4030 pull a good 30 or so stone hoppers bound for Melvin Stone around the curve by the abandoned depot in Midland, OH. In the foreground is I&O's Greenfield branch, an appendage of what was once the B&O's main line into Parkersburg, WV and ultimately Cumberland.

Remance of the old B&O depot still stands, surprisingly, given the decades of neglect, vandalism, and exposure to the elements. After walking around the exterior of it, I thought it hard to believe this station served passengers riding the National Limited until its end in 1979.

…… The washroom at Townend (National Trust) at Troutbeck in Cumbria. I can well remember my Mother on wash days using a free standing Gas Boiler (called the Copper) in our ‘Little Yard’ and me turning the handle on the Mangle exactly like this one - with assistance no doubt!!! Water was carried in buckets from the kitchen, we had the usual wooden tongues to haul the heavy washing out of the Copper to the Mangle. Thanks for the memory N/Trust. Alan:-)……

Another from a fairly recent trip to Scarborough Bluffs. From the looks of this shopping cart, it may have taken a very nasty plunge down the side of the bluffs. Laying here mangled and forgotten... That's until I stroll by and bring it back to life. Well, almost.
