Ngorongoro Crater contains one of the densest lion populations in Africa. Its lush grass, caused by the crater's annual flood, attracts most every kind of animal upon which lions prey. Lions do not bother venturing outside the crater; beyond its walls, there is little to eat but the cattle that belong to the Masai tribe, whose members are very protective of their herds and known for their deftness with spears.

Lions in the Ngorongoro Crater tend to have rather short, ragged manes. The reason is thought to be because lions with beautiful, large manes were frequently hunted. Natural selection and inbreeding most likely played their equal parts, and presto, Ngorongoro lions have spiky manes.

Coprinus comatus, commonly known as the shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane, is a common fungus often seen growing on lawns, along gravel roads and waste areas. The young fruit bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out. The caps are white, and covered with scales—this is the origin of the common names of the fungus. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, then turn black and deliquesce ('melt') into a black liquid filled with spores (hence the "ink cap" name). This mushroom is unusual because it will turn black and dissolve itself in a matter of hours after being picked or depositing spores.

When young it is an excellent edible mushroom provided that it is eaten soon after being collected (it keeps very badly because of the autodigestion of its gills and cap). If long-term storage is desired, microwaving, sauteing or simmering until limp will allow the mushrooms to be stored in a refrigerator for several days or frozen. Also, placing the mushrooms in a glass of ice water will delay the decomposition for a day or two so that one has time to incorporate them into a meal. Processing or icing must be done whether for eating or storage within four to six hours of harvest to prevent undesirable changes to the mushroom. The species is cultivated in China as food.

[Flawless] is proud to present Manè sandals: a bold design that wraps with an elegant lace that intertwines up to the ankle, leaving the foot completely exposed. The vertiginous heel slims the silhouette with grace and character, for a sensual and sophisticated elegance that does not go unnoticed.

Reader Rock Garden is not known for its mushrooms, but I'm always happy to come across the very, very occasional one. I seem to remember that it was my daughter who spotted this little cluster of Shaggy Manes on 17 September 2014. Not the most photogenic group, but I wanted to add the photo to a couple of albums, for the record.

These amazing animals are just full of pattern, color, and texture not including all of the food they were spilling on themselves at the time (seen here in the details of the hair).
