TWO MEN EXHAUSTED ONE STRUGGLES ASHORE
The manager of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, Mr. Thomas Erie Hugh Monro, only son of Captain Hugh Monro, chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, was drowned in the surf at Waikuku Beach this afternoon. Mr. Simpson managed to struggle ashore, but when assistance reached Mr. Monro he was dead. Artificial respiration was resorted to by Dr. King when tho body was brought ashore, but was without avail. The deceased leaves a widow.

Their property “Rio Loge” was named after a vessel that Thomas father, Captain Monro commanded during the years 1885 and 1890 when and engaged in the sugar trade between Mauritius and Lyttelton. She was built in 1869 and wrecked January 1909 with loss of lives. [1]
Captain Monro’s obituary:
“The death has occurred of Captain Hugh Monro, chairman of directors of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, at the age of 78. Captain Monro first went to sea in the famous barque Lurline and got his first command at the age of 22 in the brig Rio Loge, which was running cargoes from New Zealand to South Africa and Mauritius, returning with sugar. In 1889 with the late Mr. A. H. Turnbull, he began to accumulate a small fleet. Captain Monro commanded such well-known vessels as the. Manurewa, Kinclure, Timaru, Rona, and Durlow, and sailed to America and the Baltic. With Mr. Turnbull he formed the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company in 1900, and bought steamers for the coastal trade. He sold the last sailing ship Rona in 1911. Captain Monro was chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board from 1931 to 1935.

Operations Manager Brandon Schirmer heads to the stompers to unload a full harvester at his father's Ernie Shirmer Farms, during the cotton harvest, in Batesville, TX, on August 22, 2020.
Four days ago, rain showered this cotton crop, soaking the soil and making the delicate round cotton bolls droop and dangle from the plant; and softening the soil that has to support the weight of the cotton-picking equipment. Today, an approaching storm motivates them to begin a day early.
From 10 AM to 10 PM, harvesters are driven across the circular (pivot irrigated) fields. The harvesters use specialized harvester heads that twist and pull the soft, cotton boll from the plant; and then the cotton bolls are vacuumed up into a large open-air bin. When full, operators return to the mobile industrial area to unload cotton into 'stompers' (module builders). Stompers use a hydraulic ram and tramper beam to compress the cotton into modules, 32 feet long, 7 1/2 feet wide, and 9 1/2 feet tall. Once complete, the stomper is raised and pulled away, simultaneously pulling a protective tarp over the top. Once covered tight, the modules become the property of the cotton gin. At the end of each day, a vacuum is used to pick up all the fallen cotton and added to a module.
The storm never made it to Batesville, so they were able to work into the night.
The Schirmer family have owned and operated farms in the south-central Texas region for six generations, since 1875.
In the harvesters are Ernie Schirmer Farms (Batesville) Operations Manager Brandon Schirmer (in grey shirt and dark brimmed cap, 6th generation), and farm owner and father Ernie Schirmer (dark shirt and orange cap, 5th generation), Jerry Berstraeten, with son Brett; at the same time, Ernie's wife Terri (yellow shirt and tan cap), cousin Cali Erfurth (pink t-shirt), Derek Reininger (grey t-shirt and tan cap) and a fellow farmowner Carl Santleben (western hat) operate the stompers.

The World Heritage Convention sets out the responsibilities of the States Parties to identify, protect and manage natural and cultural heritage of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). While appropriate conditions for proper protection are nearly always generated at State level, most of the obligations associated with World Heritage inscriptions are usually met at the level of specific sites and this is best achieved with the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders. Their knowledge of the Convention and their understanding of the World Heritage system has a significant impact on the protection of OUV.

The Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development’s session on Measuring ICT and Gender addresses the question of what current statistics can tell us about women in the information society and how women use, benefit from and produce ICTs. The session looks at available data on gender and ICT and propose a set of priority areas where more data are needed, for discussion with the audience. The outcome of the session feeds into the work of the Partnership Task Group on Measuring Gender and ICT.

I took this photograph of Jim Cannon in 1991 when he was manager of Dulwich Hamlet. Jonathan Scarlett interviewed him for Eagle Eye fanzine and I took the photographs .
Jim Cannon made his debut for Crystal Palace on March 31, 1973 against Chelsea and went on to make 660 appearances for the club, beating Terry Long's record in the 1984-85 season. Cannon captained the side for ten seasons and won the first of three Crystal Palace Player of the Year awards in 1978.
The Rotchev house was named after Alexander Rotchev, the last manager of Fort Ross. It is the only surviving structure which contains construction techniques dating back to the Russian era. The house was built of square beams and measures 8 sazhens long by 4 sazhens wide. A sazhen is the Russian fathom and measures 7 feet.
Not necessarily a bedroom but the collection of old Russian beds in this photo may lead one to conclude this may have been some kind of nursery back in the day. The door on the left leads to what appears to be a music lounge.
Fort Ross is a former Russian settlement located on the west coast of North America in what is now Sonoma County, California USA. It was the hub of the southernmost Russian settlements in North America between 1812 to 1841. This establishment is a landmark in the history of European imperialism. The Spanish expansion went west across the Atlantic Ocean and the Russian expansion went east across Siberia and the Pacific Ocean. In the early 19th century, the two waves of expansion met on the opposite side of the world along the Pacific Coast of California, with Russia arriving from the north, Spain from the south, and the United States of America from the east.

This photo is part of a series of images captured during a road trip up the northern coast of California during late spring of 2011. This single-day trip began in the central valley of California and camera shooting started in Windsor just north of Santa Rosa and on to Bodega Bay all the way up to Fort Bragg.

This fellow helped run the place. "Used to be 80% league bowlers, 20% regular public" he says, "now it's reversed. Still made money. It was profitable depsite what people said. It was the land that got expensive. no sense relocating because no-one's going to drive to Westshore. So they sold it to Loblaw's"
Can we do the job in that timescale? Our project manager, he say yes!
