How Honduras managed to carry out genomic sequencing for the first time
June 2023
When microbiologist Soany Ávilez was selected to implement the genomic sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Honduras, she was amazed. In the wake of the pandemic, Soany had started working at the National Virology Laboratory in 2020 performing PCR tests. At that time, genomic sequencing to detect circulating variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 was carried out outside the country. But a project to provide Honduras with the capabilities to do it in situ and obtain faster results was being developed with technical support from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and financial support from the United States Government.
Although she lacked knowledge on the subject, Soany remembers that she longed for the opportunity to work in sequencing. "When they chose us (her and her partner Karla Romero) to implement sequencing in the country and move the area forward, I couldn't believe it," she says.
Genomic surveillance allows us to know the evolution of viruses and other pathogens as they change over time. Knowing those changes or mutations that can modify its transmissibility and severity, allows us to guide public health measures. During the pandemic, it was a key strategy to monitor the behavior of SARS-CoV-2 and a technique that is being integrated into the surveillance of other pathogens.
Karla Romero, the other microbiologist in charge of genomic surveillance, acknowledges that the implementation of sequencing in Honduras has been "a great challenge" that required a lot of "sacrifice and commitment" both inside and outside the laboratory.
The sequencing area had to be created from scratch. In 2022, the authorities selected and conditioned a space within the National Virology Laboratory. With the support of PAHO, a sequencer, supplies, reagents, and furniture were purchased, and Soany and Karla were trained in bioinformatics and genomic sequencing at the Gorgas Memorial Institute in Panama.
“All with the aim of strengthening the capacities for genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens in Honduras,” says Gabriela Rodriguez Segura, coordinator of the PAHO Project for the Consolidation of Genomic Sequencing Capacities in Honduras. Before these capacities were created at the local level, samples to determine the variants circulating in the country were sent to the laboratories of the Regional Network for Genomic Surveillance of COVID-19 (COVIGEN) created by PAHO to support countries without capacity to carry out sequencing in its territory.
In March 2023, the effort paid off and excitement took over the National Virology Laboratory when, after several attempts, the first sequencing of SARS-COV-2 in the country was successfully carried out. “We couldn't believe it,” says Soany. "We feel very happy because it was a great challenge and the result made us feel fulfilled."
On March 21, 2023, the results were obtained and it was the first time that the XBB sublineage of the omicron variant was detected in the country and by Honduran health professionals. For Karla, the key was “not to give up in the face of the biggest challenge”.
"It is a milestone for the country that genomic sequencing is being carried out," says Dr. Mitzi Castro, head of the National Health Surveillance Laboratory of Honduras. “It is a historic moment because we are starting from here to carry out future genomic surveillance of other pathogens of sanitary interest to the country,” she adds.
According to Dr. Castro, the country now has state-of-the-art technology. "The laboratory is at the forefront, and that is a success and a source of pride, for which we thank all those who have contributed their bit so that Honduras is not left behind."

Ogoh-ogoh are statues built for the Ngrupuk parade, which takes place on the eve of Nyepi day in Bali, Indonesia. Ogoh-ogoh normally have form of mythological beings, mostly demons. As with many creative endeavours based on Balinese Hinduism, the creation of Ogoh-ogoh represents spiritual aims inspired by Hindu philosophy.[1][2]
The main purpose of the making of Ogoh-ogoh is the purification of the natural environment of any spiritual pollutants emitted from the activities of living beings (especially humans). The forms of Ogoh-ogoh represent the Bhuta-Kala (Bhuta: eternal energy, Kala: eternal time), according to Hindu teachings. The imperceptible potentials of nature cannot be thoroughly explored by anyone. Philosophically, civilized men are required to manage the natural resources without damaging the environment itself.
Aside from being the symbol of Bhuta-Kala, Ogoh-ogoh is considered a symbol of modes of nature that form the malicious characters of living beings. Each village usually build one Ogoh-ogoh mainly built by each village's Seka Truna Truni (Balinese village's youth organization), but often some smaller ogoh-ogoh also built by groups of children around the village. Some artist also usually build one. After being paraded on a convoy around the town, finally it is burnt to ashes in a cemetery as a symbol of self-purification.
An Ogoh-ogoh is normally standing on a pad built of timber planks and bamboos. The pad is designed to sustain the Ogoh-ogoh while it is being lifted and carried around the village or the town square. There are normally eight or more men carrying the Ogoh-ogoh on their shoulders. This procession is accompanied by orchestral music performed by the youth. The use of flares is also a main part of the parade.
During the procession, the Ogoh-ogoh is rotated counter-clockwise three times. This act is done at every T-junction and crossroad of the village. Rotating the effigies during the cremational parade and the eve of Nyepi represents the contact of the bodies with the spirits. It is intended to bewilder the evil spirits so that they go away and cease harming human beings.
Managed a few shots at the Lockkeeper Keynsham when kids and the wife were all busy at school!
I have seen this shot from Lee/Ratters before and wanted to give it a go.
I had just been swimming (not here!) and the towel was in the car so thought why not
Constructive critique very welcome, I am keen to learn how to improve

There will also be three workshops today (yoga, craftivism workshop and Ecotherapy with Earth For Life) around the corner. Ask a member of staff for more information and how to register for one or more of them.
I managed to grab a couple of shots whilst I was at the track day today, this is a quick handheld panorama showing a collection of some of the ferrari's that were available for people to take out on the track.
There's only one Lambo in this shot though as they were by far the most popular cars to head onto the track with during the course of the day.
10 shots handheld, stitched using CS5 for a change to see how it fares. Not convinced on its ability to level horizons as well as Hugin, but that's probably more to do with my CS5 skills in fairness.

In 1981 together with some of my mates I went to the
pictures/movies in Frankston Victoria Australia to see the Film "Gallipoli" . I have always had an interest in Military history (especially Australian Military history) but that movie started an interest that has been with me ever since. In 1989 together with my mate Mike Barnes we flew to Istanbul , hired a car and drove down to Gallipoli for the ANZAC day service. We managed to Visit ANZAC , Helles and Suvla and most areas in between These are the photos I took on that trip , It hard to believe it was 30 years ago... Since then I have visited every battlefield in France and Belgium where the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) were involved and also the camps where they were based in the South of England. Please do have a look at the rest of the photos in the album. Best wishes "MO"

I finally managed to find some time to get out and the weather was being kind. It wasn’t raining for once! I wondered around town but there weren’t many people about today. The school holidays have finished here but the inclement weather isn’t encouraging people to come out for long. I saw a woman with her family and thought she’d make an interesting stranger, but sadly after I’d approached her and explained the project to her she said she didn’t speak French. I tried asking if she spoke English, but she didn’t. I thanked her and moved on.
I was wondering if I’d find anyone, so walked back into the main town square which is when I saw my stranger N°50 lighting up a cigarette outside the café. I asked if she had a few minutes and she looked at her watch. “A few moments.” So I explained the ideas of the project and waited to see if she was up for it. I had to repeat what I’d said as she commented on my accent and wanted to be clear that she’d understood. Once she had the idea she agreed.
Meet Mireille, she 69 years old and has been retired for some time. She worked in Administration before. She has a daughter and one grandson. After I’d taken 3 photos, less than I like but I was thinking of the time for her. We looked at them and she said they were fine other than the 2nd one, which we both agreed didn’t show her at her best.
She then said she would have to go as she had to pick up her grandson from school any second now. So I took my notes while we both walked down towards the school. She was born in Châteaudun but has lived around here for the last 15 years. When she has time she loves gardening most of all and next looking after her grandson.
We chatted about the project for a bit before she really had to go and I wanted to continue my walk while the weather was good enough. I gave her a card so she would be able to look for her photo and we said a polite “bon après-midi” before parting.
Here's the link to my first 100 strangers.

Managed to destroy 3 paintings today I've been working on for over a month when I dropped a plastic bottle of gesso on the driveway & watched it explode all over my car & the 3 canvases.
Some days I feel like I'm just meant to destroy myself. It's historic; no matter my course, I'll come back to this place over & over again.

Lyme Park is a large estate located south of Disley, Cheshire. The estate is managed by the National Trust and consists of a mansion house surrounded by formal gardens, in a deer park in the Peak District National Park.[1] The house is the largest in Cheshire,[2] and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.[3]
The estate was granted to Sir Thomas Danyers in 1346 and passed to the Leghs of Lyme by marriage in 1388. It remained in the possession of the Legh family until 1946 when it was given to the National Trust. The house dates from the latter part of the 16th century. Modifications were made to it in the 1720s by Giacomo Leoni, who retained some of the Elizabethan features and added others, particularly the courtyard and the south range. It is difficult to classify Leoni's work at Lyme, as it contains elements of both Palladian and Baroque styles.[a] Further modifications were made by Lewis Wyatt in the 19th century, especially to the interior. Formal gardens were created and developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The house, gardens and park have been used as locations for filming and they are open to the public. The Lyme Caxton Missal is on display in the Library.
The land now occupied by Lyme Park was granted to Piers Legh and his wife Margaret D'anyers, by letters patent dated January 4, 1398, by Richard II, son of the Black Prince. Margaret D'anyers' grandfather, Sir Thomas D'anyers, had taken part in retrieving the standard of the Black Prince at the Battle of Crécy in 1346, and was rewarded with annuity of 40 marks a year by the Black Prince, drawn on his Cheshire estate, and which could be exchanged for land of that value belonging to the Black Prince. Sir Thomas died in 1354, and the annuity passed to his nearest surviving kin, his granddaughter Margaret, who in 1388 married the first Piers Legh (Piers Legh I). Richard II favoured Piers and granted his family a coat of arms in 1397, and the estate of Lyme Handley in 1398 redeeming the annuity. However, Piers was executed two years later by Richard's rival for the throne, Henry Bolingbroke.[6]
When in 1415 Sir Piers Legh II was wounded in the Battle of Agincourt, his mastiff stood over and protected him for many hours through the battle. The mastiff was later returned to Legh's home and was the foundation of the Lyme Hall Mastiffs. They were bred at the hall and kept separate from other strains, figuring prominently in founding the modern breed. The strain died out around the beginning of the 20th century.[7][8]
The first record of a house on the site is in a manuscript folio dated 1465, but that house was demolished when construction of the present building began during the life of Piers Legh VII, in the middle of the 16th century.[5] This house, by an unknown designer, was L-shaped in plan with east and north ranges; piecemeal additions were made to it during the 17th century. In the 1720s Giacomo Leoni, an architect from Venice, added a south range to the house creating a courtyard plan, and made other changes.[3] While he retained some of its Elizabethan features, many of his changes were in a mixture of Palladian and Baroque styles.[2] During the latter part of the 18th century Piers Legh XIII bought most of the furniture which is in the house today. However, the family fortunes declined and the house began to deteriorate. In the early 19th century the estate was owned by Thomas Legh, who commissioned Lewis Wyatt to restore the house between 1816 and 1822. Wyatt's alterations were mainly to the interior, where he remodelled every room.[9] Leoni had intended to add a cupola to the south range but this never materialised.[10] Instead, Wyatt added a tower-like structure (a hamper) to provide bedrooms for the servants. He also added a one-storey block to the east range, containing a dining-room.[2] Later in the century William Legh, 1st Baron Newton, added stables and other buildings to the estate, and created the Dutch Garden.[9] Further alterations were made to the gardens by Thomas Legh, 2nd Baron Newton and his wife during the early 20th century.[11] In 1946 Richard Legh, 3rd Baron Newton, gave Lyme Park to the National Trust.wikipedia

managed to do a quick sketch on my way home today. Heavy police presence, lots and lots of shops with windows smashed in, and most businesses not open today. People seem quite visibly angry and upset about what's happened, and rightly so. It might not be a well off area but by and large its safe, with a strong community spirit.
