Highlights from the 2nd Annual Maker Faire 2018 presented by the Fountaindale Public Library and its Tinker Technoogy Troupe.
An event to celebrate crafts, engineering, science projects, etc. For and by all ages.All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned. Maker Faire is primarily designed to be forward-looking, showcasing makers who are exploring new forms and new technologies.
Maker Faire 2017 was bigger, louder and hotter than previous years. Many of the attractions were still the same, but they felt more grown up. I particularly enjoyed the illuminated art in the Dark Room, such as Peter Hudson’s 3D Stroboscopic Zoetrope. I also enjoyed all the ingenious robot exhbits and the Traveling Spectacular’s vaudeville performance
I gave a talk about our Maker Art classes on Sunday morning. We teach children to create magical worlds together, combining art, tech and storytelling. Our students get really engaged in the process, which helps them develop their creative, problem-solving and social skills.
The presentation was well received by a great group of teachers, parents and kids. I connected with several librarians and teachers interested in teaching Maker Art in their communities. And one mom reached out to me afterwards to say this was the best talk she heard this year.
Maker Faire remains the Mecca for Bay Area DIY hobbyists and it was well worth the trip for me. I made some good connections after my talk and learned more about robots for our next classes. Onwards!

Detroit, Kansas City, Rome, Oslo, Tokyo, Newcastle (UK), and Shenzhen are the home of "featured" 2014 Maker Faires (200+ makers), and almost 100 community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced around the United States and the world, including right here in Portland.

Notes: Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (6 January 1832 – 23 January 1883) was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator, comics artist, caricaturist and sculptor who worked primarily with wood engraving.
Félix Nadar was the pseudonym of Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (6 April 1820 – 21 March 1910), a French photographer, caricaturist, journalist, novelist and balloonist. Nadar was born in Paris in 1820.. He was a caricaturist for Le Charivari in 1848. In 1849 he created the Revue comique and the Petit journal pour rire. He took his first photographs in 1853 and in 1858 became the first person to take aerial photographs. He also pioneered the use of artificial lighting in photography, working in the catacombs of Paris. Around 1863, Nadar built a huge (6000 m³) balloon named Le Géant ("The Giant"), thereby inspiring Jules Verne's Five Weeks in a Balloon. The "Géant" project was unsuccessful and convinced him that the future belonged to heavier-than-air machines. Afterwards "The Society for the Encouragement of Aerial Locomotion by Means of Heavier than Air Machines" was established, with Nadar as president and Verne as secretary. Nadar was also the inspiration for the character of Michael Ardan in Verne's From the Earth to the Moon. On his visit to Brussels with the Géant, on 26 September 1864, Nadar erected mobile barriers to keep the crowd at a safe distance. Up to this day, crowd control barriers are known in Belgium as Nadar barriers. In April 1874, he lent his photo studio to a group of painters, thus making the first exhibition of the Impressionists possible. He photographed Victor Hugo on his death-bed in 1885. He is credited with having published (in 1886) the first photo-interview (of famous chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul, then a centenarian), and also took erotic photographs. From 1895 until his return to Paris in 1909, the Nadar photo studio was in Marseilles (France). On his passing in 1910, Nadar was buried in Le Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

Waleed Abdulhamid is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, producer, educator, film maker and humanitarian. Since 1992, he has wowed Toronto audiences with his tremendous artistic versatility and social impact work, most recently taking home the 2011 New Pioneer Award for the Arts. A resident artist at the Young Center, Waleed also sits on several grant-reviewing juries for Canadian Art Councils, appears often in Canadian festivals and has played, toured and recorded with dozens of artists, composers and bands in the areas of reggae, hip hop, R&B & jazz. He has taught at numerous schools throughout the GTA, including the University of Toronto. He has written, composed and produced music for several TV shows. His internationally acclaimed, award-winning documentary Let’s Find Away has been used to raise funds for Doctors without Borders, the Red Cross, OXFAM, UNICEF, CIDA, & the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
Waleed will be accompanied by Daniel Nebiat on February 17, 2012. Born and raised in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, Daniel Nebiat picked up the krar (a five or six-stringed instrument from Ethiopia and Eritrea) at an early age, performing traditional songs and singing in his language, Tigrigna.
In Canada since 1996, Nebiat’s career had been focused on community celebrations, weddings, festivals and nightclub performances of both popular and traditional Eritrean music. In 2006, Nebiat performed at the Glenn Gould Studio for CBC’s Onstage, at the “Horn of Africa” concert. He has participated at Afrofest, Afrikadey, Eritrean Cultural Day and Bana y’ Afrique festivals. Nebiat opened for Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 at Harbourfront Centre in 2007. The same year, he earned the distinction of being the first African artist showcased in Wavelength, the legendary launchpad for Toronto’s indie music scene.
Nebiat’s first CD “Hakimey” was released in August 2008; and features original and traditional Eritrean songs.
The Gladstone Hotel and Music Africa present special showcases every Friday in February to celebrate African Liberation Month.
