Citroën Méhari

"The Citroën Méhari was an off-road compact SUV produced by the French car maker Citroën, a variant of the Citroën 2CV. 144,953 Méharis were built between the car's French launch in May 1968 and 1988 when production ceased.

A méhari is a type of fast-running dromedary camel, which can be used for racing or transport. A méhariste was a French Armée d'Afrique and Army of the Levant cavalryman that used these camels.

 

The Méhari was based on the Citroën Dyane 6, and had a body made of ABS plastic with a soft top.

It also employed the 602 cc flat twin petrol engine shared with the 2CV6 and Citroën Ami.

This is similar to the way the mechanical parts of the 1960 Mini became the 1964 Mini Moke.

 

A four-wheel drive version of the Méhari was produced from 1980 to 1983 and had excellent off-road qualities, due to the lightness of the vehicle.

 

The standard Méhari weighs just 535 kg (1,179 lb) and has the interconnected fully independent long-travel 2CV suspension used by all of the Citroën 'A-Series' vehicles."

This company was already a supplier to Citroën, and SEAP developed a working concept of the car before presenting it to its client."

 

"The Méhari ended production in 1988 with no replacement. This left a gap in the market, that others have tried to address.

 

The Teihol company, which had been building the recently defunct Renault Rodeo, created the Tangara using 2CV mechanicals, with bolt on pre-dyed GRP panels. It also created a Citroën AX-based model, but the company ceased operations in 1990.

 

Due to its mechanical simplicity the Méhari can be restored to ‘as new’ condition – all parts including the chassis are easily available, creating a thriving restoration market."

"El Méhari es un automóvil de bajo costo descapotable producido por el fabricante francés Citroën entre los años 1968 y 1988. Se construyeron en total 144.953 unidades de este modelo en Europa.

"Desarrollado en Chile entre los años 1971 y 1973 con el nombre de Yagán, estaba basado en el Méhari francés.

A pesar de tratarse de un vehículo artesanal ya que el Yagán estaba hecho totalmente a mano y sin ningún tipo de matrices o moldes, logró una cuota de fabricación cercana a las 1.500 unidades, en su fabrica de Arica donde además se ensamblaban otros vehículos Citroën, como el Ami 8 y el 2CV. Algo muy distintivo del Yagán era que el chasis base era de Citroën 2CV y no de Méhari, y el 50% de los componentes eran chilenos, ese era el objetivo."

"Además de la versión con tracción delantera, en Europa se fabricó una con tracción a las cuatro ruedas entre 1980 y 1983; tiene una gran distancia del chasis al suelo y amortiguadores traseros de ballestas, que le permiten circular por terrenos inhóspitos.

El Ejército Francés utilizó el Méhari, modificándolo para operar con un sistema eléctrico de 24 V. El motor ofrecía la pequeña cifra de 33 cv, y llegaba a los 103 km/h con viento a favor.

Citroën Méhari en España

Ford - V8

 

Not the first maker of Vee-eights, Ford most definitely made them available to the common man. Having first democratised the car, with the Model-T, production methods for which helped reduce the cost to under $500. The following model, the 'A' would begin production in 1927. The next Model the 'B' arrived in 1932, and with it a V8 version, the model '18'. This 'V8' became the staple for the hotrodding fraternity for decades.

 

The original V8 was configured as a 90-degree V8, of 'flathead' design. A feature of the engine was the casting and machining of the block as a single unit.

 

The replacement for the 'Flathead' was the 'Y-Block', inroduced into Ford cars in 1954, and into the truck model in 1955. The engine was available in a number of capacities from early on, beginning with a 256 CID (4.2 litre). The model featured here is the 292 CID (4.8 litre) which produce 212 hp. The engine was designated the 'Thunderbird' engine, and was used in Mercurys, the Ford Thunderbird, and other high-end Ford models, including Fairlanes (the top trim level of the full-sized Ford from 1957).

 

An even larger 312 CID was available, also used in Thunderbirds, Mercurys and high-trim Fords. Optional higher power configurations via induction carburation and even a supercharged version.

 

The model 1957 Ford Fairlane and the 292 CID Y-Bock Vee-Eight have been built for Flickr LUGNuts' 64th build challenge - 'Mad Motor Skills' - focusing on the engines that power our favourite rides, be they car, bike or truck.

Sometimes I worry that I am spending too much time on flickr. The rest of the time I am certain I am.

Join us after the Attendee Reception on Thursday, September 22 for the Strata Mini Maker Faire—in partnership with Maker Faire, and on the heels of a successful Maker Faire New York.

   

Browse and interact with a gallery of sensor-laden Maker projects and discuss how they are relevant to the world of data collection and computation. You’ll be able to network with your peers working at the intersection of the Maker culture and the data revolution, while stopping to play with a variety of robots that will be on display.

 

Here’s a little preview of the featured Makers & their projects:

  

Flint Weisser’s works of sculptures and garage science has been featured in galleries across the U.S, Scotland National Museums, and on the Wired:Science, Scientific American, and Discover websites. Flint will be showcasing an array of his projects including: Expansion Cloud Chamber, Electrophorous, Electroscope, Digital spinthariscope, Kelvin (Water Drop) Generator, Spark counter, and 3 devices that measure radiation.

 

New media artist Balam Soto merges existing and custom, digital technology with artistic concepts and aesthetics to create exploratory works, including interactive art installations, murals, art video and performance. Balam will feature The Body Sound Suit, a bio-gesture capture and trigger system inspired by the arduino drum project. The suit captures human gestures/body movements and translates it into data; this captured data then triggers sound and graphics.

 

Alisdair Allan, author of Learning iOS Programming, Basic Sensors in iOS, Geolocation iOS, iOS and Sensor Networks and Augmented Reality in iOS, will display his Connecting iOS to the Real World exhibit, demonstrating how to connect your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to the real world. He’ll use the Redpark Serial Cable for iOS and the Arduino, allowing you to make your iOS device part of the Internet of Things.

 

We’ll have a 3D printer on site working its magic, and students from NYU will be showing off what they’re doing with sensors.

 

Gabriella Levine is a NYC-based interactive artist and hardware designer who works with a variety of physical mediums and digital technologies to create interactive environments that investigate new ways of representing information. Her Protei Open Source Sailing Drones project features pollution collecting sailing drones, a low-cost open-source oil collecting device that semi-autonomously sails upwind while intercepting oil sheens going downwind. The design of Protei is meant to be hurricane-ready, self-righting, inflatable, unbreakable, cheap and easy to manufacture for immediate response.

Strata Mini Maker Faire’s Robot Room will be dedicated to a special exhibit of robots such as:

 

Robotic Rover

 

This Robotic Rover can operate Fully Autonomous, Semi Autonomous and Remote Control. This robot has many sensors and modules such as XBee RF Transceiver, HMB55 digital compass, 3 axis accelerometer, EEprom, two L293 H bridge motor controllers, an ultra sonic Range finder in the front two Sharp Ir range finders left, Right & Center, a Pan and Tilt mount with two servos which moves a wireless camera and 4 PIC Micro Controllers.

 

Robotic Car

 

The Robot Room will feature a robot car, which a person can sit and ride in while another drives them via remote control.

 

Brooklyn Robot Foundry

 

Dave Van Esselstyn, an educational technologist with a love for robotics, will be representing Brooklyn Robot Foundry – a group of educators and technologists dedicated to helping Brooklyn children and families optimize their hands-on, technology-based learning experience. This interactive mini robots and robot rebuilds exhibit will have robots talking(!) about the Brooklyn Robot Foundry and their goal of creating environments where kids and families can come together to build things.

Today marks the final day of the Unknown Maker project. This project started in spring 2021 and it started all with a stack of tea towels that were around 100 years old. All the items in the book were found in thrift stores, on fleamarkets or gifted to me. There are examples of crochet, knitting, lace, tatting and embroidery.

All the items in the photographs are hidden in pockets. These trimmings are hidden in the pocket with the green embroidered blocks.

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.

 

Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.

 

The original Maker Faire was held in San Mateo, CA and in 2013 celebrated its eighth annual Bay Area event with some 900 makers and 120,000 people in attendance. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in four years to 600+ makers and 75,000 attendees. Detroit, Kansas City, Rome, Oslo, Tokyo, Newcastle (UK), and Shenzhen are the home of "featured" 2014 Maker Faires (200+ makers), and almost 100 community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced around the United States and the world, including right here in Portland.

I just had to post the photo when I received this email:

“I told my son about the new lego parts you saw at Makerfaire, and he immediately got on the web, checking google and youtube for any news of this new lego innovation. after about 30 minutes, he said it’s not real, since he couldn't find a single mention.”

 

The LEGO person at our GeekDad Booth said that this was the only version around, so perhaps it was a sneak peek… Has anyone seen this stuff mentioned before?

 

The rigid metal beams are a big step forward for the FIRST robot competitions. I asked about backward compatibility, and he showed me how the white plastic fixture (marked above) interfaces with the standard LEGO Technic parts.
