with apologies to Leonardo, digital "makeover" of Mona Lisa
According to history.com:
"Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo, a wealthy silk merchant’s wife and the mother of five children, has been a leading contender [for da Vinci's model] since an art historian identified her as the sitter in 1550... The 2005 discovery of a 500-year-old note by an acquaintance of da Vinci, which states that the artist was working on Lisa’s portrait, confirmed the theory for many scholars... For reasons that remain unclear, da Vinci never gave the 'Mona Lisa' to the Giocondo family, first taking it to France and later bequeathing it to Salaì [his longtime apprentice]."
Added note: I later learned that it is now believed that da Vinci sold it to the King of France. When it was stolen, the Italian national who stole it thought the French had stolen it, but it was sold by the artist to the French.
Although the original was painted on wood, the reproduction that I scanned was printed on textured paper, therefore both before and after have the appearance of canvas.
I gave Lisa a new do, added makeup, green contact lenses, earrings, a manicure, lowered neckline and changed to a brighter color of clothing. I also added eyebrows, one hair at a time. (The style at the time was for women to either pluck or shave eyebrows.) It took me over a month to complete this, working a couple of hours most days. I think I ended up with about 50 layers.
This is from around 1999. If I were to do it today, I would change the way I did a few things because I know how to do things differently or better in Photoshop and the newer version of Photoshop has more options.
I would go back to rework my image, but my original file with all the layers was lost in a hard-drive crash.

In May of 2017, I did something that I wasn't sure if I would ever do. Get a makeover. It took a lot of planning for me to organise a visit to Boys Will Be Girls and the incredibly talented Cindy Conti. I was very nervous but she quickly settled me in. I was worried that I would look the same as I would if I had done my make-up. A man trying his best to look like the woman inside himself. I can honestly say right now that I was absolutely blown away by the results! I admit that it took a lot of effort not to burst into tears!
This was the first photograph that she took.

“I was going to give myself a makeover, but then I realized that I’m perfect just the way I am!”

Title: Canvas Makeover
Year: 2015
Medium: Makeup
Size: 12” x 16”
Description:
I covered this self-stretched canvas with an abstract image created entirely of nail polish and eye-shadow. In part, I was drawn to the textures I could create. It is also a piece about gender, creating assertive new meanings out of decorative materials designed to satisfy the male gaze.
