11.4 -- Photo by SONJ -- On Friday, November 4, students from Unified middle and high schools in New Jersey gathered together at Paramus High School to develop their leadership skills, and discuss ways to promote inclusion in their schools at one of SONJ's many Youth Leadership Summits. The day's theme was "Changemakers," and students with and without disabilities worked together to discuess how they can make positive change in their schools and communities.
Make It Interesting, Challenge #2 - Feather

* Makes
1L (4 cups)
Ingredients:
500g long fresh red chillies, stems trimmed
3 garlic cloves, peeled
750ml (3 cups) white vinegar
645g (3 cups) caster sugar
Method:
Halve 100g of the chillies and place in the bowl of a food processor. Halve and deseed the remaining chillies. Coarsely chop and place in the food processor. Add garlic and 250ml white vinegar. Process until finely chopped.
Place the chilli mixture, remaining vinegar and caster sugar in a large saucepan over a low heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until the sugar dissolves.
Increase heat to high and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 35-40 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Pour into sterilised airtight bottles and seal.
Notes:
For a milder tasting sweet chilli sauce, replace half the chillis with 250 red capsicum, halved and deseeded.

Kinetic: Relating to, caused by, or producing motion.
These are called “Kinetic” photographs because there is motion, energy, and movement involved, specifically my and the camera’s movements.
I choose a light source and/or subject, set my camera for a long exposure (typically around 4 seconds), focus on my subject and push the shutter button. When the shutter opens I move the camera around with my hands...large, sweeping, dramatic movements. And then I will literally throw the camera several feet up into the air, most times imparting a spinning or whirling motion to it as I hurl it upward. I may throw the camera several times and also utilize hand-held motion several times in one photo. None of these are Photoshopped, layered, or a composite photo...what you see occurs in one shot, one take.
Aren’t I afraid that I will drop and break my camera? For regular followers of my photostream and this series you will know that I have already done so. This little camera has been dropped many times, and broken once when dropped on concrete outside. It still functions...not so well for regular photographs, but superbly for more kinetic work.

Throughout history, simple machines have helped people do maritime-related tasks such as loading and unloading cargo, aiming naval cannon and raising and lowering anchors. Come aboard Make It Work! Discover how simple machines make maritime work easier.
Discover the efficiency of inclined planes by pulling cargo up gangplanks. Experiment with different boat hull designs to see which one moves through a channel with the least resistance. Aim heavy naval cannon with very little effort using this powerful lifting device. Hoist a loaded wooden barrel with ease using a handcart. Turn a capstan and imagine you are raising and lowering an anchor. Use different pulley systems to determine their effectiveness in lifting heavy cargo.
In addition, discover historic objects from the Museum’s collection related to Wilmington’s boat and ship building history and make connections to simple machines. View maritime-related photographs from the Lower Cape Fear. Go on a simple machines scavenger hunt throughout the museum!
