Old jailhouse in Jerome, AZ

Chaos is on the horizon if Unifor and Translink do not reach an agreement by midnight tonight. Make a deal people, and keep buses running!

Skytrain would be operational, but overloaded, and a shutdown in mid-December is a scary possibility for public transit users.

I wanted to make a panorama of a whole bunch of shots I took this morning but the colour saturation is quite different in the five separate HDRs that I made. So, it's gonna need a little more work. However, this one has come out nice on its own. Shot from Takeshiba Pier on the morning of the 1st January 2009, whilst waiting for the first sunrise of the new year.

Great light. Lovely fresh morning air. Well, actually it was bloody freezing :-)

In Malawi, pregnancy and childbirth is a matter of life and death. One in 36 women die in childbirth compared to one in 4,600 in the UK.

Background

On 11 July 2012 the UK Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will host a groundbreaking summit to cut in half the current number of women and girls in the world’s poorest countries without access to contraception, but who wish to avoid pregnancy or space their children.

Every woman and girl deserves the opportunity to to determine her own future. Contraceptives give the world's poorest women the power to decide if and when to have another child.

Happy New Year to all my Flickr friends; may 2014 bring you Miracles of Joy, Prosperity, Wholeness and Great Peace.

What a difference a year can make. Rosetta arrived at Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko on 6 August 2014, achieving rendezvous at a distance of 100 km before moving even closer to the nucleus in the following weeks. The image shown on the left was taken with the navigation camera, NavCam, on rendezvous day, when Rosetta was about 121 km out.

At the time, the curious shape of this double-lobed object, so familiar to many now, had only been revealed a couple of weeks earlier. Over the course of the following 12 months, Rosetta has flown around the comet at a wide range of distances, from as far as a few hundred kilometres and as close as 6 km from its surface, investigating different regions as they came into view.

The image on the right was taken on 6 August 2015, exactly a year to the day of Rosetta's historic rendezvous, from a distance of 261 km. During this time, the comet has moved along its orbit much closer to the Sun – from almost 540 million km last year to around 186 million km this week – and the intensity of the sunlight has increased significantly, by more than seven fold, greatly boosting the comet’s activity. As the solar radiation has been warming its frozen ices, these have sublimated, turning into gas, and pouring out into space. The gas drags the dust along with it and together they form the comet’s fuzzy atmosphere, or coma.

The comet’s increased exposure to the Sun’s energy and its resulting activity can be discerned in several differences between these two images, which have been processed in a similar way in order to enable a meaningful comparison.

First, because the comet was further from the Sun in August 2014, it both received and reflected less sunlight. As a result, the two images presented here were taken using different exposure times (3 seconds on 6 August 2014; 0.79 seconds on 6 August 2015), but they have been scaled in intensity here. Thus in the 2014 image, the comet nucleus appears darker than in the 2015 image.

Equally importantly, the region around the nucleus is dark in 2014, as there is relatively little material flowing away from it. The 2015 counterpart is releasing prominent outflows and jets of material, and the overall environment is brighter in the recent image, with unlit patches of the nucleus standing out as a silhouette against it.

The increased activity is the reason for the larger distance of Rosetta from the comet today: the increased concentration of gas and dust over the last few months means the spacecraft has had to back off in order to avoid confusing its startrackers. It is now studying the comet from safer distances, and is currently operating some 300 km out.

In the earlier image, the small comet lobe is in the foreground, with the broad circular depression known as Hatmehit clearly visible, while the large lobe lies further away to the top right. In the more recent image, the small lobe is pointing towards the top right of the image, with the Hatmehit region still visible, albeit from a changed viewing geometry.

Portrayed in the right image are also the comet’s neck region and different portions of the large lobe, some of which only came into view in the past few months, as seasons changed on the comet in May 2015.

This week, on Thursday 13 August, the comet reaches its closest point to the Sun along its orbit, known as perihelion. Join the adventure by watching our Google+ Hangout scheduled for 13:00–15:00 GMT (15:00–17:00 CEST).

Cupcakes 39 / 366 Tomorrow is my birthday and it's a tradition we take cakes into work... It also seems to be a tradition I make my own... So this is today's offering.... Yum yum!

This metal gantry stands above the point where a stream drains into the Thames, cutting a small channel through the mud.

At this juncture, I was being pursued by a myriad of flies, bugs, all looking to make a meal of me (and my blood). So, didn't hang around long. As soon as I turned inland, they disappeared.

Rain, rain, rain! That's all we seem to be getting in Florida these days and today is no exception. Though on the day that this particular image was taken, it was much more than rain.... it was more of a torrential downpour, complete with thunder, lightning, the entire inclement weather package. During this weather, I was making a 5-hr drive home and my cell phone coverage was sketchy. I tried to focus on the positive and what I could control.

So as I drove home, I decided to take a "photography and wildlife friendly" route. As I drove through the pounding rain, I thought to myself "there's no way there will be anything out in this". Every so often the rain would stop for 5 minutes or so, the opportunities for shooting were limited. Then all of a sudden I saw a crested caracara just sitting on one of the fence posts which line the roadside.

As I began to capture a few images of it, I noticed how unaffected by my presence it was - just sort of chilling out in between the storms. Now I have always been fascinated by caracara, aka the "Mexican Eagle", for its funky appearance and attitude. There was something about this one - with its wet feathers - that made it more intriguing to me and its markings were quite beautiful.

It was at that point that I realized that I had found what I was supposed to find... for I was in the same place as this amazing bird.... just hanging out trying to make the most of my day in the midst of the stormy weather. Funny how that works. Immediately my spirits lifted and I soon observed other things around me that I hadn't seen before, sort of a heightened awareness. That's what I love most about photography, nature photography especially.

Well, I hope that as I head out, in the rain, that I can remember the feeling that I had on this day and find the beauty and uniqueness in everything around me (you know, between the raindrops).

Hope that everyone has a great day and thanks so much for stopping by to view. Catching up soon, so thanks for your patience as well.

Is it too early for Christmas crafting?

I've wanted to do one of these shots since I joined flickr basically, but I only got round to it yesterday. Basically these are the contents of my bag. Not always in there at the same time (eg tripod) but mostly!

How's everyone doing? TGIF...and one week to Christmas. Have you all made your Christmas plans yet? I haven't!

This picture is almost 2 weeks old and we have more snow than this but I realized that my last Sakura photo was taken in September... Whoopsie, I guess. Let's just blame her almost-broken body and the fact that the most suitable season for her is summer.

She has new eyechips but you can't really see them here. :P I was in an anime/gaming convention last weekend and they had one table where they sold Pullips, wigs and Obitsu bodies and I bought a new wig (It was meant for Cassie but I think that Sakura's going to get it). The only problem is that it was too big and when I tried to make it smaller it had this super annoying air bubble in the middle. Is there a specific way to sew it away? I'd love to make it look normal without beanies :/

School is trying to kill me when this period/semester/? is approaching its end. Too much homework to do, too many projects to finish, too many exams coming... No time for uploading anything here nor to my blog Dx

And photographing dolls outside is basically killing me. It's -15°C every day and even walking to the bus stop in the morning is too much for me! (and I live in Southern Finland, some places in Lapland have had even -40°C ...)

GIMP 3.2.0-RC2 in Debian Forky

The three shots were cropped from pictures made with Bright and Sat -1 settings, destined for sunny days. I was not perfect, but the images made by chance were so similar to colorful nebulae space shots I decided to reprocess them and screen print (always with frames). Such view changes the original events in plus. BTW. Sat setting went from 100 to nearly 300, following the bad common habits. :) In short - I like the nebulae lights much, much more. :) BTW.2. The shots were made thru window panes.
