Ubehebe, Death Valley, California
Ubehebe Crater is the largest of several dry maars, craters created when ground water comes in contact with magma, instantaneously turning to steam and exploding. The resulting phreatic explosion rips a crater in the ground, scattering bedrock, cinders, and fine debris about the area. In a wet environment, the resulting maar will fill with water, leaving a circular lake. In Death Valley any maar will remain dry, perhaps collecting a bit of a salt deposit at its bottom.
If you leave the parking lot at Ubehebe and following the hiking trails up the rim (not down into the crater) you will find the fascinating remains of other, smaller maars. Here in the foreground is a section of Little Hebe Crater overlapping an earlier maar dominating the background.

'Magma'
I love getting lost in the little alleys of The Old Town at Downtown Dubai but it wasn't until I flew over this development which really made me appreciate its incredibly inspired architecture and in particular, its lighting design. What an impression it made on me! Those glowing warm lights are incredibly inviting and the whole project feels like Arabian Nights magic, straight out of the Disney cartoon. It was incredibly rewarding to take my camera over there!
Tech notes: I knew I wouldn't have another chance to take this shot so I had to be absolutely sure to get it right the first time. It was night and chopper was heading back to the airport, pretty much in a straight line. We were going fast and I knew motion blur was going to be a a real challenge. I guessed that shutter speed of 1/60s would be just about fast enough to freeze the action. Barely just. Once I set the shutter speed, I opened the aperture of my Canon TS-E 24mm lens all the way to f3.5 and then I kept raising ISO until the exposure was right. It read 4,000! I didn't know how good the picture would be at such high sensitivity. I was worried about excessive grain and highlight/shadow clipping which occurs with cranked-up ISO. There was nothing to be worried about though. Canon 5dmk3 pulled it off without any issues. Picture is sharp and exhibits very little noise even at 100% magnification. Very happy with the result!

L’ÉGALITÉ HOMME – FEMME AU CENTRE DE L’ŒUVRE DE MAGMA
« Regarder la rue sans baisser les yeux ». C’est le message d’Océane, Donna et Elisa mis en scène et en couleurs par l’artiste française Magma. Une œuvre réalisée avec l’association Intramurock qui interpelle quant à la question du harcèlement de rue. La rue, un espace de liberté et d’égalité entre les hommes et les femmes.
Se sentir bien dans ses baskets, en sécurité et sur un pied d’égalité avec les personnes que l’on peut croiser dans la rue est primordial. C’est pour mettre en avant la question du harcèlement de rue que l’association Intramurock a organisé une résidence avec l’artiste Magma en septembre 2022. Après trois semaines d’ateliers autour d’un travail d’écriture et de graphisme, les adolescents se sont prêtés au jeu des photos, travail préparatoire indispensable avant la réalisation du mur. « Afficher trois personnages féminins sur un mur comme celui-ci permet aux filles de se réapproprier la rue qui apparaît plutôt appartenir aux hommes » explique Magma. « J’ai choisi de les représenter dans leur élément avec leur chien ou sur leur moto. » Et d’insister autour d’un message : « Regarder la rue sans baisser les yeux ».
