Europe - UK - United Kingdom - England - North West England - Cumbria - Lakes - Lake District National Park - Derwent Water Lake in Borough of Allerdale - South of Keswick town

Derwentwater (or Derwent Water) is one of the principal bodies of water in the Lake District National Park in North West England. It lies wholly within the Borough of Allerdale, in the county of Cumbria. The lake occupies part of Borrowdale and lies immediately south of the town of Keswick. It is both fed and drained by the River Derwent. It measures approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) long by 1 mile (1.6 km) wide and is some 72 feet (22 m) deep. There are several islands within the lake, one of which is inhabited.

I think that probably every photographer that goes to Lake District comes home with at least one photo of a wooden jetty on the lake. This one in particular is rather popular. I have tried to make it little bit my own by using torch and lighting it up against dark and stormy sky.

Dun Briste, a spectacular sea-stack, estimated to be approximately 50 metres in height, stands 80 metres off Downpatrick Head, in the town-land of Knockaun, east of Ballycastle, Co. Mayo

Downpatrick Head is where the Atlantic has gouged a huge bay from the mighty cliffs and their summits scoured of all vegetation except grass by the ceaseless ocean winds. It is habited by many different species of birds which take up positions on the stratified face of the stack as the seasons change.

There are several stories in folklore as to how the sea-stack came to be cut off from the mainland.

One tells of Geodruisge, an ogre, who lived on the spot where the stack now stands. He was a most unpleasant character, often making life difficult for St. Patrick, who prayed frequently at the church on Downpatrick Head. The saint became exasperated, and prayed to God to put some barrier of separation between this tyrant and himself. The following morning the stack with the tyrant’s residence was found to be separated from the mainland. Geodruisg had no means of escaping and so he perished.

A long exposition shot, just to capture the fight f this static rock against the dynamic ocean. The sunny day made the emerald grass to glow.

The little village of Elgol is one of the most photographed parts of the Isle of Skye. Elgol is an increasingly popular destination for climbers and hill walkers of all levels due to its unparalleled access to the famous Cuillin Hills and the various smaller hills dotted around wherever you look. Elgol is a crofting and fishing village in the Strath area of the Island. The small, sparsely populated village is scattered along the final mile of the road from Broadford.

Though you may never have heard of the little fishing and crofting village of Elgol in the Scottish Highlands, there is a good chance that you have seen photos of Elgol's famous mountain and seascape scenery in postcards, Scottish books and even film scenes and television programmes. From the larger Skye village of Broadford many visitors have turned down the enchanting Elgol road completely unaware of the magnificent scenes that await them around almost every corner. The 15 mile journey over twisty single-track roads will take you past High Pastures Cave, one of the most significant archaeological finds in the area, then sweep you around the corner to the ancient, historical site of Kilchrist church

Every mile you drive on your journey from Broadford to Elgol will fool you into thinking that the scenery simply cannot be bettered. However, you will be proved wrong when you arrive in Elgol and reach the shore and the little fishing harbour. There is simply nothing on earth to compare to the site of the Cuillin Hills beyond the Elgol shore - a breathtaking view whether it is sunny or stormy.

There are various opinions as to the meaning of the name, 'Elgol' (or Ealaghol in the native Gaelic, some suggesting 'The Noble Dale' and others 'The Weeping Swan' (folklore details the story of a Viking captain who perished when his longboat named 'The Swan' came to attack the people of Elgol).

As you travel further north and west of Scotland, in particular on Scotland's islands, you will sooner or later find yourself on a road too narrow to pass the vehicle coming the other way towards you. Driving these roads requires thought and concentration. There are usually plenty of passing places (but they can get fewer and further between on more minor roads), and these are usually, but not always, marked with the sign captured on this shot.

The trick on single track roads is to drive with a combination of consideration and assertiveness. In an ideal world, vehicles approaching one another should adjust their speeds so as to meet at a passing place. That way neither waits for the other, and both proceed at best speed. It doesnt always happen like this, but in general, people in highlands are very friendly and tend to behave this way. Extra bonus is to watch those confused tourists that are just getting used to driving on the other site than in their home country so they tend to pick the first passing place, park on the opposite side as they would do in continental Europe and wait, staring like a scared rabbit being caught in headlights (I used to be one of them too, but no more!!).

Grundarfjörður is a small town, situated in the north of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the west of Iceland. The town is situated in front of an impressive mountain range which has a slightly alpine look. On the sea side, there is a beautiful mountain called Kirkjufell which is a diverted piece of the mountain strip Mýrarhyrna. The mountain forms a small peninsula.

The town itself is a charming, quiet, nice fishing village. Another awesome hidden corner in Iceland.

This one was shot at 1.30 a.m., with the sun pointing at North, lighting all the town and the mountains nearby. It was quite cloudy, so, again, a long exposition would spread that fantastic light through the image.

Faroe Islands - Island of Viðoy - Norðoyar Region - Viðareiði - The northernmost settlement in the Faroe Islands - Classic view of Vidareidi church with cliffs of Bordoy and Kunoy islands

Although I was happy with my shots from this place during afternoon light, we still decided to come back for sunset time as it is a perfect spot for it during this time of year. This amazing light lasted for only about 10 mins after huge snow/rain/hail storm and before another one came in while the gale strong wind was trying to blow us away, however the final result is what I call the divine light...

Europe - UK - United Kingdom - England - Northumberland - North East of England - Mary's Lighthouse - Whitley Bay - Tyne & Wear Coast - Tidal island linked to mainland by concrete causeway which is submerged at periods of high tide

St Mary's Lighthouse, near Whitley Bay, is on a tidal island which is linked to the mainland by a concrete causeway which is submerged at periods of high tide. The lighthouse and adjacent keepers' cottages were built in 1898. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1984.

Reached between the tides via a short causeway from the car park, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. Visitors can climb the 137 steps inside the tower to the lantern room to enjoy spectacular views along the North East coast of England. If you cannot manage the steps, a live video facility allows you to experience the same panorama at ground level.

For the first time in seven month I've been sleeping ("boofen") in our National Park again. So after crawling into my sleeping bag right at midnight I set my alarm to 4 am to be awake for sunrise. Another 30 minutes hike brought me to this spot, right above the Lorenzwand.

I did not expect to have any fog at all - the night was pretty warm - but at the lower elevations in the distance some fog stayed until a while after sunrise. I'm a little tired right now though.

If you are interested in nature, Iceland is a great place to visit. Terrain in Iceland is so rugged due to centuries of volcanic activity, this is where the US tested their lunar landing module that eventually drove on the moon! Also because of Norse woodcutting and volcanic activity, there are virtually no trees on the island! There is one small "forest" that is a national landmark.

Word has it that Leif Ericsson named Iceland and Greenland like he did to get explorers to go to Greenland (only to find millions of square miles of ice). Iceland, though Greenland's neighbor, benefits from the gulf and jet streams. However, the wind blows almost constantly and reaches 100 mph (sustained for a day or two)!

Weather in Iceland can be playful, there was a rain all day when I took this photo, but suddently at the end we had this wonderful sun coming out of dark clouds. Just to give you an idea of scale of this place - those small sticks in the ground are power pole supporting wires with electricity.

Peyto Lake (pea-toe) is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway.During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway.

Buachaille Etive Mòr (Scottish Gaelic: Buachaille Eite Mòr, meaning "the great herdsman of Etive"), generally known to climbers simply as The Buachaille or The Beuckle, is a mountain at the head of Glen Etive in the Highlands of Scotland. Its almost perfect pyramidal form, as seen from the A82 road when travelling towards Glen Coe, makes it one of the most recognisable mountains in Scotland, and one of the most depicted on postcards and calendars. Buachaille Etive Mòr takes the form of a ridge nearly five miles (8 km) in length, almost entirely encircled by the River Etive and its tributaries. The ridge contains four principal tops: from north-east to south-west these are Stob Dearg (1022 m), Stob na Doire (1011 m), Stob Coire Altruim (941 m) and Stob na Bròige (956 m). Stob Dearg and Stob na Bròige are both Munros; the latter was promoted to Munro status by the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1997.

The steep, craggy north-eastern face of Stob Dearg forms the classic aspect of the mountain as seen from the Kings House Hotel, and constitutes the most direct route of ascent for climbers and scramblers. Buachaille Etive Mòr is separated from its sister mountain of Buachaille Etive Beag to the west by the valley of Lairig Gartain. To the east lies Glen Etive, which provides an alternative route of ascent, heading up steep grassy slopes to the summit of Stob na Bròige.

If you plan your trip well, this might be the view that you’ll have nearly out of your window. Kings House Hotel is one of those amazing places you can stay and practice your photography as soon as you step out of the door. I have purposely booked 2 nights there and could not be happier with the results (and all that “extra” sleep I got, while not needing to drive far as you shoot till 11.30PM and should start at 4AM if the strong will gets you out of the bed). Note that during summer time, you need to book way ahead of your trip as it is extremely popular place, especially with walkers.

Salalah and Dhofar region offers visitors an enormous variety of things to see and do. The natural beauty of the surrounding area is breathtaking. You can witness the stunning views of dramatic mountains reaching right to the edge of the sea. You can experience wadis and beaches as well as the springs. Salalah is a coastal city located on the shores of the Indian Ocean, in the southern part of Oman. Although close to the Arabian desert, Salalah enjoys a pleasant tropical climate and even in the summer the temperatures are not too hot as the coastal fringe of Dhofar and Salalah is touched by the winds of the southwest monsoon between June and September. The surface winds encourage an upwelling of colder waters in the Indian Ocean which cool the over-lying moisture-laden air. The fog cools temperatures considerably, such that Salalah is a popular destination for Gulf visitors in the summer as a respite from the relentless heat. The phenomenon of this rain-bearing fog is known locally as the Khareef.

Lush greenness and fog is the last thing one would expect in the Middle East, especially in the middle of summer when temperatures in Kuwait are reaching nearly 60C. Salalah in Oman however offers such a retrieve during Khareef season. The hills and plains are changed to a green oasis due to drizzle downfall and water springs gush in the wadis and in the fogy hills. When the sun light touches the grass, the green is brighter than anywhere I've seen. I have waited on this spot for the light the be right for a while and love the final result.

Europe - UK - United Kingdom - England - North West England - Cumbria - Lakes - Lake District National Park - Keswick - Castlerigg Stone Circle - One of most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain

Castlerigg Stone Circle (Keswick Carles, Carles, Carsles or Castle-rig) near Keswick in England is one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain and is the most visited stone circle in Cumbria. Every year, thousands of people make the short journey from Keswick to the plateau of Castlerigg Fell and to Chestnut Hill, on which the monument stands. This plateau forms the raised centre of a natural amphitheatre created by the surrounding fells and from within the circle it is possible to see some of the highest peaks in Cumbria: Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grasmoor and Blencathra.

The stones are of a local metamorphic slate, set in a flattened circle, measuring 32.6 m (107 ft) at its widest and 29.5 m (97 ft) at its narrowest. The heaviest stone has been estimated to weigh around 16 tons and the tallest stone measures approximately 2.3m high. There is a 3.3m wide gap in its northern edge, which may have been an entrance. Within the circle, abutting its eastern quadrant, is a roughly rectangular setting of a further 10 stones. The circle was probably constructed around 3200 BC (Late Neolithic/Early Bronze-Age), making it one of the earliest stone circles in Britain and possibly in Europe

It is not so easy to come up with unique take on a place like Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the most visited places in Lake District. It was raining quite heavily and the result was that there was rather large water puddle inside the stone circle and I have used it in my favor to capture this place with reflection. This angle was the lowest possible as I was holding the camera just above the water level.

Europe - UK - England - London - St. Paul's Cathedral & Millennium Footbridge - Footbridge steel suspension bridge crossing the River Thames linking Bankside with the City, located between Southwark Bridge (downstream) and Blackfriars Railway Bridge (upstream).

The London Millennium Footbridge is a footbridge steel suspension bridge crossing the River Thames in London, England, linking Bankside with the City. It is located between Southwark Bridge (downstream) and Blackfriars Railway Bridge (upstream). The bridge is owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. Construction of the bridge began in 1998, with the opening on 10 June 2000. Londoners nicknamed the bridge the Wobbly Bridge after participants in a special event to open the bridge (a charity walk on behalf of Save the Children) felt an unexpected (and, for some, uncomfortable) swaying motion on the first two days after the bridge opened. The bridge was closed later that day, and after two days of limited access the bridge was closed for almost two years while modifications were made to eliminate the wobble entirely. It was reopened in 2002.

The southern end of the bridge is near Globe Theatre, the Bankside Gallery and Tate Modern, the north end next to the City of London School below St Paul's Cathedral. The bridge alignment is such that a clear view of St Paul's south facade is presented from across the river, framed by the bridge supports.

Sometimes nature seems to reward you. I had spotted this storm on weather maps over the Gorges du Verdon and I drove two hours under the rain and lightnings just hoping to be there at the right place at the right time, and this time luck was on my side! Here is the most intense sunset that I have never seen, an amazing sky which later let place to a wonderful Milky Way! I had been searching for long a sky like this, with no success, I can't believe this finally happened to me!

-----------------------------------------------

Isle of Skye - The Quirang is a fascinating rock formation on the Trotternish peninsula on Skye. It is approximately two miles north west of Staffin and six miles south east of Rubha Hunish. The Quiraing is a spectacular landslip on the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach, the northernmost summit of the Trotternish Ridge on the Isle of Skye. The whole of the Trotternish Ridge escarpment was formed by a great series of landslips; the Quiraing is the only part of the slip still moving, the road at its base near Flodigarry requires repairs each year.

The Trotternish Ridge lies on Skye's northernmost peninsula known as Trotternish. The northernmost summit on this ridge is known as the Quirang which has a fantastic maze of pinnacles, cliffs and flat grass tables that were formed by an ancient landslide of biblical proportions. From below these cliffs look huge, upon closer inspection you find many intricacies - scree slopes provide entrances to reveal an intricate maze of deep chasms and huge rock walls.

While looking at my photostream lately I realized I that hardly post any photos with any green color in them. No surprise I guess as there is hardly anything green in the Middle East. As I'm starting to prepare next trip to Scotland this June I went through some last year photos. Those of you that think that you'll come to Isle of Skye and you'll be welcomed by light like this, might be disappointed. You can get your share of rain rather than this wonderful light. Even thought the plan was to hike for one whole day around Quirang, the reality was that due to the weather condition we had only one early morning with such a wonderful light. I nearly didn't have enough strength to get out of bed after several days of late night shooting and early mornings. Mind you that sunset is around 11PM and sunrise around 4AM in June, you can imagine how much sleep you get when always try to capture the best light. Landscape photography is not an easy job, but with results like this it is definitely worth it.

Norwegian forests remind me of the German forests of my childhood: lush, green, wet and rich in different mosses, trees, and ferns. Unfortunately, in my region, forests are mostly dry nowadays, orange and dead. It was quite magical to step into this Norwegian fairytale close to Bergen and experience nature at its best.

Area of Zekreet provides some lovely desert formation created by the sea in ancient times.

This wonderful place is also featured in Night Sky around the World Time-Lapse Video among many other interesting and unique locations around the world.

This photo was taken early morning in the Lage Vuursche Forest on the way from Hilversum to Soestduinen. Lage Vuursche is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Baarn, and lies about 5 km west of Soest, in the middle of the forest. Drakestein, the former residence of Queen Beatrix, is situated just east of the village. An oasis of rest directly next to the big city life.
