Large Copper ssp batava. An extremely rare butterfly that occurs exclusively in the Netherlands in three lowland peat areas in Northwest Overijssel and Southeast Friesland: De Weerribben, De Wieden and the Rottige Meente. It occurs nowhere else in the world!

I have mixed feelings about the appearance of migrant hawkers each summer. I look forward to it with anticipation, but they are one of the last dragonflies to emerge so they serve as a reminder that the end of summer is not too far away.
