A rice swift butterfly on a garden plant. I was busy photographing a snail that had climbed up the leaves of a water hyacinth after sunset when I suddenly noticed this butterfly on the adjoining plant. It allowed me precisely two shots before flying away.
A Common four ring butterfly (Ypthima hiebneri) on a grass blade.
These low flying butterflies are a dull brown gray, but they are adorned with black and yellow eye spots that are used to confuse predators. It looks almost the same as the common three ring, but instead of three eye spots on the underside hind wing, it has four. Like other ring butterflies, its host plant is grasses.
Colourful chap.
This is not my backyard but a butterfly house, although these things just did not want to land. I went at midday when they are most active, 2 and half hours running about like an idiot in 40 degree heat, (great fun). So I do have a couple more to post, dont worry only a couple.
A Monarch butterfly feeds at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, New York, on its way to Mexico for the winter.
I photographed this butterfly in my backyard. The Gulf Fritillary is also known as the Passion butterfly because of its attraction for Passionflower. The lay their eggs on or near a host plant like the Passionflowers.
I suppose we all go and shot butterflys at some point. Gave the macro an airing but they would not sit still so just as well I took my staple gun with me too.
