....but not that big, just unusually large for this type of spider. But it looks especially fierce in closeup.

This massive huntsman, Gnathopalystes kochi, is feasting on a cricket. This photo was taken with the spider hanging on the underside of a large leaf and my back lying on the wet forest floor.

This little cutie came inside with some flowers I'd picked for a bouquet. Easily could have fit on the head of a pin. S/he strung the web between the bouquet on the coffee table and the arm of the couch. Silly thing :-)

And because of my fear of spiders, I was inspired to add the following little ditty:

I Hate Spiders (by me)

I walked around the house one day

Being told I had stuff to do

A honey-do list of things in my hand

Which always makes me blue

I grabbed my tools and set to work

Feeling a little bit glum

Not paying much attention

I was bitten on the end of my thumb

I freaked when I saw the black widow

Slicking and piercing me so

Soon my body began to swell so much

I was certain my head would explode

I ran screaming into the house

Wanting my honey to help yet again

But she smacked me upside the head with a pot

No arguments were I going to win

So I went back outside and nursed my wound

And tried to see through the slits in my eyes

My thumb was growing much bigger

Was now the size of my thighs

I sneaked around the corner

A long-handled ax now in my hand

I’d show this spider who was boss

And that fear wasn’t the reason I ran

But that really isn’t the truth

I get irrational from the fear it brings

For whenever I see a spider

I wet my pants, and a few other things

Course there is something much worse

The fear of a different pain

If I don’t pull my weight around the house

My honey’s gonna flatten me like a train

So I creep around the corner

And go where others might fear to tread

But if the truth be known, I am a wimp

And would rather be hiding under my bed

I catch a glimpse of an hour glass

So red and seeming to rise

But how was I supposed to know that was blood

Dripping freely from my very own eyes

I started to swing the ax

Whacking madly at everything in my way

I kept screaming at the top of my lungs

“Come on, spider-dude --- get your ass out here, let’s play!”

I swung and I swung

Wood flying easily in every direction

For that blade right there at the end of my ax

Had been honed to ultimate perfection

Suddenly I heard the screaming

Realized that it wasn’t my own

I stopped my swing in mid-air

And the horror suddenly hit home

There I was on the outside

Actually saw my honey there within

What the hell’s going on here, I thought

Knowing the walls weren’t really that thin

Her hands were on her hips

On her face was a look, I do swear

That if the devil had shown up to party right then

I would have gone gladly and bought all of the beer

There’s no point in providing the details

Of the words that spat from her lips

Let’s just say no seven second delay

Could possibly provide enough blips

The conclusion of this story

Is mired in sadness and gloom

For the whole of my entire summer

Was spent building another new room

But that really isn’t the worst part

Having to rebuild what my idiocy did ruin

Rather it’s that damn spider who keeps watching

Periodically laughing and shooting me the moon

I saw this cute little thing eating dinner and just had to take its picture.
