I am away in New Jersey this weekend doing a boys baseball tournament. I happened to notice this beautiful praying mantis on the field!

After extensive courtship (see companion picture) these insects finally went all the way!

Heavily cropped. Size of an insect: ~1mm.

I have found these chaps exceedingly difficult to photograph. I have shed loads of out of focus shots. However perseverance pays. In focus at last.

The largest dragonflies in North America they have a length of around three inches and a wingspan of

around four and one half inches.

this insect was one of a more or less stationary 'herd' of about fifty. still don't know what the white feathery growth is on its back. as part of the herd it looked like some kind of fungal growth on a tree limb, which I guess is the point of the growth. anyone know any more about it?
