First attempt at trying out an environmental macro capture with Canon G12 set to its widest focal length (roughly 28mm). By setting it to manual focus I was able to have the lens literally within a few centimeters from the mating beetles. The minimum focal distance on the G12 is an incredible 1cm! The 5.6 aperture may not equate to much depth of field on a DSLR sensor but on the smaller G12 sensor it's probably the equivalent to 14f. This along with the wide angle setting makes it a feasible option for environmental macro shots.

A tiny snail, magnificent in its miniature scale, navigates the rough, cracked terrain of a white wall. The contrast between the smooth brown shell and the gritty texture of the surface is stunning.

The housefly (Musca domestica) is a fly of the suborder Cyclorrhapha. It is believed to have evolved in the Cenozoic era, possibly in the Middle East, and has spread all over the world as a commensal of humans. It is the most common fly species found in houses. Adults are grey to black, with four dark, longitudinal lines on the thorax, slightly hairy bodies, and a single pair of membranous wings. They have red eyes, set farther apart in the slightly larger female.
