Well first off let me say that Santa brought me a late Christmas present ... indirectly. My eldest daughter who is into photography like me gave me a LED light ring for taking macro captures. She thought it would be cool to use. The issue was that I really did not have a macro lens, and also all my lenses have 77mm filter rings ... and the light kit only had adapters up to 67mm.
She was disappointed when I told her this, and was going to return it and see if she could get a LED light kit for larger lenses ... I told her NOT to, and that this was FINALLY my sign to go ahead and get the Macro lens. I had been toying with getting the 100mm 2.8 by Canon for well over a year now figuring it would be great for portraits and also taking true macros.
Mrs. Krach was fine with me taking the plunge with the new lens, and I ordered it Christmas night. Amazingly without even express shipping, the lens arrived today already (guess the delivery trucks are empty ;)
So yeah, after working all day at the office, quite the fun to come home and start testing it out.
This capture here was taken of our Schnauzer (Who will really not be happy because he needs some grooming) who grudgingly posed there in the really low poor lighting, but was perfect for testing out the new 100mm lens for focusing quickly in the poor light on the very hard to see 'black eye' there beyond all that hair. Was impressed with the results given the challenging conditions. (Note to self, time to get out the clippers this coming weekend ...)
BTW ... by having the 100mm around for portraits, my daughter will be happy now as my 5 year old trusty Sigma 70/200 f2.8 that I was using as my portrait lens, she will be able to now 'borrow'. Hence I think this was her whole idea all along by getting me the LED filter ring light.

There are so many awesome zip macro captures, I will keep trying.

Dandelions. Very common weed that adorns urban areas, gardens, fields and just about anywhere. Whatever you think of it, its various stages of transition are magical from a photographic perspective.
Dandelions may be considered a nuisance in parts of the garden, especially in weed-free lawns but have many herbal uses and are a good early source of nectar and pollen for insects so worth tolerating where possible.
Taraxacum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, which consists of species commonly known as Dandelions.

Sometimes photos don't quite turn out how we plan...like this one.🙈 I was intending to take a crisp macro shot of these water droplets, but instead I ended up with this dreamy abstract looking image. Which I love, by the way, much more than the image I thought I was taking 💜
What photos have you taken that you've loved more than the planned shot?

Lycaena phlaeas (Linnaeus, 1761), aka the small copper, is a butterfly in the Lycaenidae family. Its specific name phlaeas has a dual meaning; from the Greek phlego, "to burn up" and from the Latin floreo, "to flourish". It is widespread species and common across Europe, Asia, North America, and North Africa.
I spotted this one last May, posing on Smyrnium olusatrum at the shores of Setrachos River in Cyprus. I used a similar method as my previous macro captures: handheld shot, taken with Nikon D750 and Nikon 105 mm f/2.8 VR, with a 1/200s shutter speed at f/11 and ISO 100, plus SB-900 flash diffused.
Thank you very much for stopping by, your comments and feedback are always welcomed and appreciated!

Extreme macro capture of three needles with threads in blue light.
This is my first attempt to make an extreme macro ! it was realized with reversed lens technique with 2 lenses. I used 2 non macro lenses, the first one was Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7 installed on my Panasonic GH4 body. The second one was Panasonic Lumix G 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom. The zoom was on 14mm position and reversed. This technique allows to do some extreme macro captures with non macro lenses ! The deep of field is very very shallow so this is not easy to make focus ;) next time I will try to do some focus stack to have some deeper field !

Another fly macro, captured with the same equipment as the previous one: 36mm extension tube + ring flash and crop DX.
After about 60 - 70 pics w/ speedlight, only one worked..My knees are killing me..lol..I have to start using a tripod..

clarifying for those curious -- this is a real snowflake. macro capture and then cropped. thanks for the visit and interest!
Lucky shot... Didn't even know what I captured until I brought it home and looked on laptop..was surprised
A macro detail of a small, polished lace agate slab - it shows some rather pretty patterning, I think, and the red-orange-brown color is natural (of course).
