Two desiccated camel thorn trees stand stranded in the desolate landscape of the Deadvlei in the Namib-Nakluft National Park in Namibia. The Deadvlei is a clay pan into which excess rainfall used to flood seasonally from the Tsauchab river. When the rains failed and the river dried up, the trees were left to die in the desert heat having become cut off by the shifting dunes. These trees appear interlocked like two praying mantises in a dance of death - and have been so for 700 years.
The Lich King and his favorite devotee... Even the most vile of villains have the desire to waltz.

"You've got at least three more weeks, longer if we get rain" the farmer told me. He was referring to how much time remained before this field of feed corn would be harvested. His reply was music to my ears knowing I had more time. The corn has been withering for days now since the first frost. The leaves now parched and pale. Dead cornstalks provide a backdrop like no other. Something about the way the leaves crinkle and hang lifelessly, almost as if they are weeping. For me it's like a canvas of death upon which to compose mournful imagery. The concept for this photo was to convey that same weeping quality in the model's clothing. During the shoot the part of my mind occupied with the technical aspects of camera and exposure went into autopilot. My other brain hemisphere (the creative one) was responded to the sight of Katie as she swayed gently as she was buffeted by cold, harsh winds. I kept the shutter clicking as the cloth billowed and around her. Such animation in this eerie scene. It put me in mind of a crow or maybe a bat. This frame jumped out at me later. The draping of cloth seemed perfect with just enough of Katie's face exposed to reveal the human form. The downcast gaze in visual harmony with the surroundings. The perfect visual integration of figure and the cornstalks. Very difficult to conclude a session such as this, knowing the spell will be broken the moment I walk away. But it invariably must.
The end of some get well tulips... we have had flu (Di) and a cold (Rod) over the past week or so but feeling better now, they must have done their job!
