Dovestone Reservoir lies at the convergence of the valleys of the Greenfield and Chew Brooks above the village of Greenfield, on Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester, England. The reservoir is on the very edge of the Peak District National Park bordering the South Pennines. It supplies drinking water to the surrounding area and is a tourist attraction, providing several walks amongst picturesque landscapes.
John Platt of Oldham built a Neo-Gothic mansion at Ashway Gap on the south side of the valley in 1850. It was used as a shooting lodge but after his brother James's death in a shooting accident on the moor above it, the house was left empty. The house was later acquired by the Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge and Dukinfield Waterworks Joint Committee. Boundary stones demarcating the extent of the estate are located at intervals along the footpaths along the south side of the reservoir. During World War I the waterworks board offered the house for use as a hospital. It was demolished in 1981.
The Ashworth Cross memorial to James Platt MP 1857
On the northern end of Dove Stone Moss, above the Ashway Gap, the Ashway Stone is a memorial to James Platt, MP for Oldham, who was killed by an accidental discharge of the gun of Josiah Radcliffe, the Mayor of Oldham.
The reservoir scheme in the Greenfield and Chew Valleys by the Ashton-Under-Lyne, Stalybridge and Dukinfield Waterworks Joint Committee commenced in 1870. The scheme was completed with Dovestone Reservoir in 1968 to collect water from the surrounding moorland. The main contractor was A.E. Farr (Civil Engineers) of Westbury, Wiltshire. Its construction was opposed by local mill owners, who claimed that damming the river would cut off their water supply. As a result, a tunnel was built higher up in the hillside to bypass the reservoir.
The graffiti originally refers to the secrets of the Baha'i Gardens in Haifa, Israel. There is supposed to be an entire underground city under the gardens, inside the Carmel Mountain, but no one who isn't Baha'i can get in there.

Uluru and Kata Tjuta lie near the southern margin of the Amadeus Basin that first formed about 900 million years ago and received deposition until about 300 million years ago.
The older sediments in the Amadeus Basin were deformed and folded about 550 million years ago, and mountain ranges were uplifted in an event the geologists call the Petermann Ranges Orogeny. At this time there were no vegetation and the bare mountains eroded easily. Huge amounts of sediment formed alluvial fans adjacent to the ranges. It is the remains of at least two of these alluvial fans that are seen today as Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The site of Kata Tjuta was closer to the mountain ranges and coarse gravels were deposited whereas only sand reached the site of Uluru. The sand was rich in feldspar and is often referred to as arkose.
Subsequently about 500 million years ago a shallow sea covered the region. The alluvial fans of sandstone and conglomerate were at least 2.5km thick and were gradually covered by sand and mud. The Uluru feldspathic sand was compressed and cemented into sandstone and the coarse gravels of Kata Tjuta into conglomerate.
The sea receded between 400 and 300 million years ago and the rocks were folded and fractured. This second major folding is called the Alice Springs Orogeny. It raised the region above sea level. The horizontal layers of the Uluru arkose were folded and turned nearly 90 degrees to their present position. The Kata Tjuta conglomerates were tilted only about 15 to 20 degrees from the horizontal. The rocks at the surface eroded rapidly. This erosion continues at a slower rate.
A broad valley developed between Uluru and Kata Tjuta around 65 million years ago and was partly filled with river sands and swamp deposits. At that time the climate was wet. Only during the past 500,000 years has the climate become drier and a thin blanket of wind-blown sand covered the sediments.
Uluru and Kata Tjuta are therefore the visible tips of rocks that extend far beneath the surface.
The sculptured shapes are likely to be a combination of mechanical erosion of sand from the rock and other events such as chemical changes caused by moisture.
The major valleys of Kata Tjuta may reflect fractures that formed during the Alice Springs Orogeny. Chemical weathering due to ground water widened the fissures and rainwater run-off gradually formed the canyons and domes we see today.
Unlike Kata Tjuta, there are no major joints and fractures visible in Uluru. Water erosion formed the valleys in the arkose on the southern side of Uluru. Rain run-off formed the steep valleys with potholes and plunge pools, often in series. On the north-west side water and weathering has produced parallel raised ridges outlining the sedimentary layers of Uluru.
The flaky surface of Uluru results from the chemical decay of minerals. The characteristic rusty colour of the exposed surface of these flakes is caused by the oxidation or rusting of the iron in the arkose. The fresh arkose is a grey colour.
As the surface rocks are heated and cooled, the release of pressure produces fissures parallel to the rock surfaces. These fissures are visible on Uluru and near the summits of some of the Kata Tjuta domes. Eventually these large "plates" of rock break away.
Scientists still debate the formation of the caves at Uluru. Some say they can begin with water lying in dimples in the rock. The weathering process can then form a hollow and gradually 'eats' backward and upward into the rock until it becomes a cave. Others say that the 'high' caves on the southern side of Uluru may have begun by water soaking in when the plain surface was at a higher level. Once soaked, the weathering process could again eat upward and backward to form a cave. The spaced high caves on the north-eastern and western faces may have begun by the flaking process and honeycombed out by wind and water over time.

Since when is Montana FISHBURNE Samuel L Jackson's daughter? This is why you shouldn't believe anything you read on MediaTakeout
This is a small booklet that was prepared by the Historical Service Board of the American Historical Association. This is an interesting read. Although it is out of date here 66 years later it indicates the thoughts of Americans on the Philippines just after the WWII.
The old Lier Mental Hospital was abandoned in 1986 and still is.
We arrived at 04:00 in the morning, and hoped that we would avoid meeting the local kids who sometimes uses this place to drink, look for ghosts and scare each other. We had some peaceful but also scary hours inside the abandoned building, all alone, or at least we liked to believe that we were alone.
The rumor says that the staff at Lier Mental Hospital tested new medicines, lobotomy, electroshocks and drugs like LSD on the patients. During the years 1941 to 1981 it is estimated that more than 3000 people were lobotomized in Norway, many of theme right here in this building.
Thanks to Ansgar Valbø for joining me on this trip and sharing tips and advice during the shoot and processing.

On May 13, 1607, at a small low-lying wooded peninsula, virtually an island, the Jamestown Settlement was established on the south side of what is now known as the Virginia Peninsula by English colonists. Soon a dozen subsidiary settlements such as Martin's Hundred and Henricus were established in areas along the James River.[citation needed]
The first meeting of a representative government group in the American colonies was held at the Jamestown Settlement on July 30, 1619, making Jamestown the first Capital of Virginia. Among the 22 members of this first legislative group was the governor, who was appointed by officials of the Virginia Company in London. The governor in turn appointed six members of the colony to be his council. The other 15 members were elected by the free men of the Virginia Colony who were over 17 and owned land. This body, known as the House of Burgesses, later became the House of Delegates of the Virginia General Assembly.
