Surgery went very well - Sculpt update on The Space Jockey - 1:18 scale - ALIEN. Spoke earlier about receiving new resource images that provided more detail on the creatures skull - particularly it's lower jaw. Come to find out the jaw is split....and unfortunately mine was not. I say "was" because last night I broke out the dremel and some smaller sculpting tools, carefully worked out the existing, now fully cured jaw and replaced is with a sculpted split version. May be difficult to see in these images since they were taken with my smartphone but I'm happy it's more film accurate now. Even thought the sculpt as a whole will not look exactly as the Giger set piece (trying to get it close), items like the jaw need to be accurate and was worth the risk to fix it smile emoticon #alien #spacejockey #nostromo #derelict #giger #sculpture #biomechanical #diorama #avesfixit
Completed 1:18 head sculpt/paint app of the Alien in the 1979 Sir Ridley Scott motion picture ALIEN. This will be the first in three seperate head sculpt variations. Some shots I used a bright light to blow through the clouded dome to capture the look underneath. Others I left as is. I can't wait to begin sculpting the body to this guy - the xenomorph bug has bitten me and I want to do more!!! LOL! I'm really enjoying this project! www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYHX8AMKrTA&feature=share&...

Build progress of the Narcissus Shuttle - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. So much progress but still only scratched the surface. Worked primarily on the wall panel for "The Stowaway", building the details around the slumbering beast. A mix of scratch building using styrene sheet, sculpting using a two part epoxy and casting replication. Nothing is finalized of course, even the side tanks are held in place using some wax clay...I need to construct t a rack. So much more to go. I may begin building the framework leading to the supply closets and the airlock before moving onto the next project in progress (figure sculpting). Hope you enjoy the progress so far! Sculpt update on The Queen - (Aliens 86) and the Egg Morpher (Aliens: Defiance). All 1:18 scale, sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt by Aves Studio LLC.
Began sculpting the lower jaw of the Queen. Started with a rough sculpt of the jaw, eyeballing the proportion and adding addition girth to the sculpt that once cured can be reduced through carving and sanding.
You can see my progression via the images attached. The next step will be to add a separate gumline that will include a set of lower teeth. Again, separate from the jaw so I can cast the piece in clear resin when it's time for replication.
The "neck" of the queen will need to be reworked once the master casts have been made. I'm using the smaller Revoltech Queen figure as an articulation reference for much of the articulation points for my sculpt.
For the Eggmorpher from Defiance, I've been sculpting the details to the back of the creature including the "pipes" as I like to call them as well as the separate spinal piece that emerges just below the back of the neck.
Next challenge for this sculpt will be the hands and the upper legs.
I've got a ton of pieces to mold and cast. And since just getting over a bad illness and this hurricane scare, it put me off a couple weeks. Sorry about that. I will always try for sure to get one update a week...don't want anyone to think I've fallen off LOL!
Hope you enjoyed the update! Always, more to come!

Back to some scratch building - Build update on the Narcissus Shuttle - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. My final "static posed" alien will be the stowaway. Some work on the sleep chamber crew - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Starting with Kane. I plan on doing static figures of each character sleeping in their chambers (diorama work in progress). Creepy image of his arms with pins jetting out but there is a reason for it all. Need to sculpt his sleep ware then add the forearms...then patch up the seams. I'll use the same body for Ash, Dallas and Brett. Parker will have a heavier sculpt. #alien #sleepchamber #nostromo #kane #sith_fire30
Sculpt progress on the Newborn. Alien: Resurrection - 1:18 scale.
With the sculpt of the ALIENS(86) Queen in progress, I thought it would be fun to match her up with her future offspring thanks to Ripley 8 (going to have to be a fan to know what I'm talking about) and get a look at the scale. Once the lower jaw of the Queen is complete I will get a better idea but so far I think both scale pretty well with one another and enhances my hopes to one day have a Resurrection diorama featuring the "Birth of the Newborn". Till then, both stands on their own and both have a ton of work to have down before that road is crossed.
This update focuses in on the Newborn and it's open mouth variant I'm working on. My previous update featured the jaw wired into place. This week I'm sculpting in the gaps and detailing the optional tongue that will be held by a magnet.
From some of the early production images, the tongue appeared to have "buds" over its surface...possibly glads for smell and taste. A trait from Ripley's side of the family for sure. So I'm taking a blank tongue I formed using Aves FIXIT sculpt and detailing it with small portions of additional FIXIT forming the buds. The entire surface isn't covered in these glads so I need to pay attention as to not overdo the surface with these things LOL!
I know the Newborn doesn't get a ton of love from the Alien community but I must admit, it's been one of my more enjoyable projects over the past year or so...and I think it's because of the fusion between the human and the xenomorph. You get to work with a little of both when sculpting this guy....at least I don't have to sculpt a TAIL! LOL! That Queen though...the tail will be a major project in itself.
Hope you enjoyed the update. Any questions, let me know. Everything you see has been hand sculpted using Aves FIXIT Sculpt - a two-part epoxy that can be found here

Build progress on the Narcissus Shuttle - 1:18 scale - ALIEN 79. Finally an update huh?! It's all about the storage doors...had to do some major updates to the doors after finding some reference material that gave me a better look at the doors details. Rewoked the door handles and the door's interiors. Also it's my first time building door hinges! Hinges work great, although not permanently attached at this time while there's so much more building to be done . The two small tabs venturing off the side of the door has small magnets to hold the door close. More updates to come! #alien #narcissus #shuttle #nostromo #diorama #scratchbuilding #ripley

Always wanting to make more work for myself and not let things be, I noticed while watching ALIEN the other night a sort of tapered edge going across the center of the creature's dome. This is easily seen when the beast is at rest on the Narcissus....just before it strikes out it's hand at Ripley. So, whatta ya gonna do.....Had to make some adjustments to my dome sculpt and vacuum form some samples. Will I be replacing the domes already painted?....Heck no! I love them...but, an alternate dome wouldn't hurt right? I know....I'm ridiculous. Anyway, enjoy my ghetto vacuum form station set up in the back of my truck bed...hey, when you don't have a huge work studio, you do what ya gotta do to create something. LOL! Images were taken with my smartphone so apologies about the quality on some of them... #alien #vacuumforming #dome #sculpting #nostromo

I remember the master concept designer Ron Cobb speaking about how he loved to draw corridors...well, i love to build them in 1:18 scale! LOL! Here is corridor portal C to the Nostromo inspired by the 1979 film ALIEN. Both panels were made using sheet styrene. Seam lines need to be removed and the sculptural/detailed elements need to be added. These two panels will then have molds made and cast a couple times.
Paint progress on "The Beast:- ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. A couple quick smartphone shots. The final head sculpt has been painted for this figure - that's 7 head variants total! This time I chose to paint the dome completely opaque at the front and picking up a little texture to go along with it. Better images later so you can see the inner jaw resting inside the partially opened mouth. I have the Alien" Isolation beast to paint up, the bodies of the 79 version and several other head sculpts and bodies to complete. Will spend a few more weeks painting then it will be back to sculpting some figures and the Space Jockey along with some diorama building. #alien #nostromo #painting #sculpting #giger

Sculpt update on The Queen - Aliens (86) - and the Egg Morpher - Aliens: Defiance - Dark Horse Comics. Both 1:18 scale.
The Queen
Completed the rough sculpt of the lower mandible and teeth. The lower mandible is a skeletal sculpt for the moment while I adjust and refine the teeth. After the lower teeth are complete, flesh detail will be added to the mandible.
The teeth are being sculpted on a separate pallet, so when completed can have a mold made and cast in clear resin. The teeth are individually sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, a two-part epoxy from Aves Studio LLC. Once cured, I've begun refining each using dental tools and fine-grit sandpaper. Hope to have them at a full shine similar to the top set of teeth soon.
I still have to sculpt the gum line for the lower teeth and the pallet will eventually be set deeper into the lower mandible than what you see here. Many adjustments will be made after castings are made. Then additional casts will be made.
Do the top and bottom teeth line up? Close but not really - not too concerned with that since my sculpt will feature multiple head sculpts and not a jointed jaw. So perfect alignment isn't a priority here...although I will do my best to get it as close as possible before making molds.
The Egg Morpher
Began filling the detail to the back "pipes" of the beast. I've also begun the sculpt of the creature's hands which will be very similar to the Giger Alien hands but larger. The rough sculpt right now resemble Bugs Bunny gloves and not that of the nightmarish xenomorph but no worries, that will all change....just how I work.
Hope you enjoyed the updates!!! Trying to get an update knocked out each week. If not, every other week for sure with updates in between.

7/16/21 - Sculpt update on the Space Jockey - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale.
So after the inevitable cutting and resizing of the torso that almost made my work go viral for all the wrong reasons (I was briefly a cake designer on reddit it seems), it is once again whole and at this stage, complete.
Check out the comparison shot, before and after - the difference in length was a half an inch.
Along with the sculpt work that replaced that which was reduced and adjusted during the resize, I made sculpt changes to the creature's cranium, completed the detail behind the head and neck of the doomed pilot and reworked the sculpt of the hands to appear more bony and less fleshed out. I actually still have a bot of dremeling to do to the hands...and a moment ago I said this was complete (rolls eyes) LOL!
Next step, taking a break so I can get back to work on other projects. That being said, I know how I am and when there's a step needing to be done it will drive me crazy till it's complete so don't expect this project to be tabled anytime soon. BUT...believe I have the luxury of multitasking now LOL! Thinking about building up the remaining front of the chair, where the "canon" will sit. I'll have a better explanation in the update video that will follow up next week.
Thanks for checking in on my latest update! Hope you enjoy the pics! More to come!

Sculpt Update (IMAGES) on my 1:18 scaled Space Jockey - ALIENS 1979. Sculpted using Aves FIXIT Sculpt.
I've posted a video as well so please check that out. youtu.be/LL6moVvkzkI
I "dremeled" out a chasm to insert a separate sculpted piece of tubing that will be sculpted over to become a permanent fixture. I also carved out a portal to insert the "guard" that goes down the back of the chair, parallel to the interior tubing. Some adjustments need to be made and additional sculpting needs to be added but I'm very pleased with how it all fits.
One step closer to finishing the back of the chair!
Hope you enjoy the photos! Thanks again for all the comments and support! More updates coming!

"Dressing a Sculpt" is a term I use for taking high quality shots of a sculpt while it's still a work in progress to evaluate proportion and sculpt errors (if any). I find this beneficial because I sculpt the figure in portions - head, upper torso, lower abdomen, upper arms etc...all separate, never as one piece.
I use pins or bits of Monster Clay (wax based) to bring the parts together and pose in both a neutral stance and when I can, action poses. Sometimes the parts are too cumbersome to pose dynamically. I may throw in some color and shadow to see if I'm capturing the "feel" of the subject at hand. How it's interpreted in the comic book or film it's inspired from.
So here are several "dressed" images of the Egg Layer Xenomorph from the Dark Horse Comics series Aliens: Defiance. Posed this guy next door to my Alien Newborn who is sharing the same pedestal at the moment. Took a couple shots of her as well for the heck of it.
Hope you enjoy! More to come! #alien #aliens #darkhorsecomics #defiance #xenomorph #horror #sciencefiction #spacehorror #monsters #customactionfigures #sculpture #miniatures #avesstudio #fixitsculpt #hive #aliensdefiance #art
