This phase occurs about halfway between Full Moon and New Moon. The Moon appears around midnight during this phase.
The silhouette of a tree is caused by the rising moon. The raw file was processed in Digital Photo Professional. The image was edited in PaintShop Pro. A local tone mapping adjustment layer was used to enhance the details of the moon.

Clear skies all week allowed me to watch the moon wax to just over half full from a barely visible crescent, but a cloudy night on Saturday and Sunday ruined the rest of the viewing.

Took shots in burst mode as moon in a small clear patch, stacked 14 images in Registax 6 and cropped etc in CS2. In a blue sky it pays to turn predictive tracking off in R6 and manually place alignment points yourself. I used 12 ap's. Used a Canon 500D and Canon F4 IS L 70-200mm zoom lens set at 200mm
Anticipation for a Northern Lights show was high on September 12, 2014 after a squarely Earth-facing X-flare launched a CME towards our planet. The Lights were a no-show in Hastings, but sky watching was still fun as this waning gibbous moon, approximately 79% illuminated, lit up the sky.
A cold or snow moon of 2018 falls on the winter solstice. The snow moon is the December's full moon. The raw file was processed in Digital Photo Professional.
