A lunar phase or Moon phase is the apparent shape of the Moon's directly sunlit portion as viewed from the Earth (because the Moon is tidally locked with the Earth, the same hemisphere is always facing the Earth). In common usage, the four major phases are the new moon, the first quarter, the full moon and the last quarter; the four minor phases are waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, and waning crescent. A lunar month is the time between successive recurrences of the same phase: due to the eccentricity of the Moon's orbit, this duration is not perfectly constant but averages about 29.5 days.

The appearance of the Moon (its phase) gradually changes over a lunar month as the relative orbital positions of the Moon around Earth, and Earth around the Sun, shift. The visible side of the Moon is sunlit to varying extents, depending on the position of the Moon in its orbit, with the sunlit portion varying from 0% (at new moon) to nearly 100% (at full moon).

There are four principal (primary, or major) lunar phases: the new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter (also known as third or final quarter), when the Moon's ecliptic longitude is at an angle to the Sun (as viewed from the center of the Earth) of 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° respectively. Each of these phases appears at slightly different times at different locations on Earth, and tabulated times are therefore always geocentric (calculated for the Earth's center).

Between the principal phases are intermediate phases, during which the apparent shape of the illuminated Moon is either crescent or gibbous. On average, the intermediate phases last one-quarter of a synodic month, or 7.38 days.

The term waxing is used for an intermediate phase when the Moon's apparent shape is thickening, from new to a full moon; and waning when the shape is thinning. The duration from full moon to new moon (or new moon to full moon) varies from approximately 13 days 22+1⁄2 hours to about 15 days 14+1⁄2 hours.

Waxing Crescent Moon (9.8% illumination) over spring Sapporo.

The large, dark feature in ~4 o'clock position is the Sea of Crises (Mare Crisium), an ancient lava plain. Several impact craters are also well visible.

Moon at sunset

Thin crescent Moon at sunset, photographed yesterday evening from Recco (Genoa). The Moon shows low solar elongation with only a few percent illumination. The twilight sky enhances the atmospheric color gradient, while the Ligurian Sea reflects the last daylight tones, producing a sharp contrast between the blue water and the warm orange sky.

Qantas Airways Limited is the flag carrier of Australia and its largest airline by fleet size, international flights and international destinations. It is the third oldest airline in the world, after KLM and Avianca, having been founded in November 1920. The airline is based in the Sydney suburb of Mascot, adjacent to its main hub at Sydney Airport. As of March 2014, Qantas had a 65% share of the Australian domestic market and carried 14.9% of all passengers travelling in and out of Australia.

The day moon is a Waxing Crescent 32% illuminated moon. Waxing Crescent is the lunar phase on 16 June 2021, Wednesday. Seen from Earth, illuminated fraction of the Moon surface is 32% and growing larger. The 6 days young Moon is in Virgo. The Moon is 6 days young. Earth's natural satellite is moving from the beginning to the first part of current synodic month. This is lunation 265 of Meeus index or 1218 from Brown series. 63451

While it sure didn’t seem like it at the moment, the 2:30am alarm turned out to be worth it. I lugged my camera & tripod out to the driveway to be able to get a clear view of this colorful celestial show. I struggled with some camera shake and blurred images at first, and towards the end of totality, the humidity spiked to 91% which resulted in my lens fogging up so I couldn’t shoot anymore after that. But seeing the total eclipse with my eyes was the most rewarding part. And as a bonus, I did end up with a couple of good shots like this one. I hope you were able to catch a glimpse last night — if not, enjoy this image! 😊

Lovely on Large

Just crop, no PP! I put lots of love into capturing this picture for my wife. If you look hard on large you will see light trail of an airplane taking-off. Shot with 30 sec exposure time!!!

Singapore Airlines is the flag carrier airline of Singapore with its hub at Singapore Changi Airport. The airline uses the Singapore Girl as its central figure in corporate branding. It has been ranked as the world's best airline by Skytrax four times and topped Travel & Leisure's best airline rankings for more than 20 years. Singapore Airlines was the launch customer for the Airbus A380 - the world's largest passenger aircraft - as well as the Boeing 787-10 and the ultra long range version of the Airbus A350-900.

The day moon is the Waning Crescent phase. On this day, the moon is 22.93 days old and 45.01% illuminated with a tilt of -69.349°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 370,289.17 km and the moon sign is Aquarius. The Moon phase for May 13th, 2023 is a Waning Crescent phase. R_32516

This waxing gibbous moon turned out to be the perfect opportunity to shoot a moon crosser.

The first twenty-odd aircraft all flew just above or just below the moon. Eventually however, this Airbus showed up at 23:03 local time, flying in an easterly direction and making a perfect crossing.

early lunar phase above the evening desert sky

The image shows Earth’s Moon in a waxing gibbous phase, between first quarter and full. More than half of the disk is sunlit, relief is most pronounced along the terminator, where low-angle light highlights craters and mountains. Bright anorthositic highlands (light-colored igneous plutonic rock) contrast with basaltic maria (dark lowlands of the moon - remnants of ancient volcanic flooding). This phase precedes the full moon as the Moon moves toward opposition.

10" Reflector and Canon 500D. North area out of focus slightly as have to hold cam manually in focusser tube.... to many brandies tonight :-) Single shot in jpg too.

Three fold drift A longer than required exposure and ICM capture of the moon transitioning across the frame. An interpretation of lunar motion, capturing the moon as if three exposures though there is only one layered by its own movement (and mine 😁) revealing three sequential positions within a single moment. The moon reveals its own pathway — one light becoming many,

fracturing into memory, emergence, and return. The cycle of light in dark continues.

EXIF Note: Error in date & time. I did not enter the correct day or time when I reconfigured some of the settings. I always keep a manual note of my observations to cross reference the digital dates. I only had the camera for a few days around this time. Have a look at my Orion Nebula dated 2022-03-06, that was the first time I tried it out on the night sky with my 254mm Newtonian.

We walked to the same cliff tonight as I walked to two days ago, only from a beach in the other direction.

When we stood on the top, I commented that it was weird that we couldn't see the moon. It was up early and so beautiful when I was there two days ago. We started walking down, and when I looked back I suddenly saw this king size moon coming up behind the mountains. Awesome! (Stavanger Airport Sola to the left).

And for those who wonder...the moon isn't edited at all.

This is one of the lunar phases I like, because I can see the details of the craters and mountains, unlike seeing the moon when its full. There is just enough side light that brings out those details, especially where the edge of night meets the edge of daylight.
