In 1964 my late father, Beaudry Glen Pautz, accepted a job as Press Officer for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa. It was the start of the Cold War "space race", the CSIR collaborated with the Americans and Beau received a lot of space programme material and press kits from NASA. I still have most of those historic documents in my collection. Here's a selection of them.

"Boosted Arcturus," a space ship on the DYNA-SOAR plan that could carry payloads of 360,000 pounds to a minimum earth-orbit or 60,000 pounds to a soft landing on the moon. It's 1st stage booster would be an airbreathing engine, a turbo-ramjet combination.

As it happened live I filmed the TV coverage on July 20, 1969 with my Super 8 camera. (No sound in those days on home Super 8 film cameras.) To capture the most historical event in human history - setting foot on another world for the first time - I filmed the TV set as the landing happened at 1:17 PM Pacific Time while watching Walter Cronkite's coverage.

Lunar Lander at the Science Museum, London.
The Apollo Lunar Module (LM) was the lander portion of the Apollo spacecraft built for the US Apollo program by Grumman to carry a crew of two from lunar orbit to the surface and back. Six such craft successfully landed on the Moon between 1969–1972.
Scientist-astronaut Harrison H. Schmitt, Lunar Module Pilot, is photographed next to the deployed United States flag during lunar surface Extravehicular Activity (EVA) at the Taurus-Littrow landing site. The highest part of the flag appears to point toward our planet Earth in the distant background. This picture was taken by Astronaut Eugene A. Cernan, Apollo 17 Commander. While Astronauts Cernan and Schmitt descended in the Lunar Module (LM) to explore the moon, astronaut Ronald E. Evans, Command Module Pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit.

Lunar liftoff, using the spent descent stage as a launch pad, just like Apollo. Note that lack of information concerning the nature of the lunar surface, at that time, resulted in the inclusion of an "impact spike" on the landing stage, to anchor the vehicle in a vertical position, no matter what the composition of the surface.

I captured this particular image in low light, using a phone camera, so please excuse the quality!
Also see this great piece on Time Magazine's special issue entitled "To the Moon and Back" published two weeks after the Apollo 11 landing. Back in 1969 I created a great scrapbook of the landing that I still treasure to this day.

I captured these images in Pretoria using an old HP flatbed scanner.
