In 1964 my late father, Beaudry Glen Pautz, accepted a job as Press Officer for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa. It was the start of the Cold War "space race", the CSIR collaborated with the Americans and Beau received a lot of space programme material and press kits from NASA. I still have most of those historic documents in my collection. Here's a selection of them.

WIKIPEDIA: In 1950, at the start of the Korean War, von Braun and his team were transferred to Huntsville, Alabama, his home for the next 20 years. Between 1950 and 1956, von Braun led the Army's rocket development team at Redstone Arsenal, resulting in the Redstone rocket, which was used for the first live nuclear ballistic missile tests conducted by the United States. This led to development of the first high-precision inertial guidance system on the Redstone rocket.[51]
As director of the Development Operations Division of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA), von Braun, with his team, then developed the Jupiter-C, a modified Redstone rocket.[52] The Jupiter-C successfully launched the West's first satellite, Explorer 1, on January 31, 1958. This event signaled the birth of America's space program.
Despite the work on the Redstone rocket, the twelve years from 1945 to 1957 were probably some of the most frustrating for von Braun and his colleagues. In the Soviet Union, Sergei Korolev and his team of scientists and engineers plowed ahead with several new rocket designs and the Sputnik program, while the American government was not very interested in von Braun's work or views and only embarked on a very modest rocket-building program. Space Center Houston is the official visitor center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian Affiliate Museum owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Spaceflight Education Foundation. The center opened in 1992 and hosts more than 1 million visitors annually in its 250,000-square-foot educational complex with over 400 space artifacts, permanent and traveling exhibits, attractions, live shows and theaters dedicated to preserving the history of America's human spaceflight program.
The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (JSC) is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Manned Spacecraft Center, where human spaceflight training, research, and flight control are conducted. Construction of the center, designed by Charles Luckman, began in 1962 and the 1,620-acre facility officially opened for business in September 1963. The center is home to NASA's astronaut corps, and is responsible for training astronauts from both the U.S. and its international partners. It has become popularly known for its flight control function, identified as "Mission Control" during the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo–Soyuz, and Space Shuttle program flights. It is also the site of the former Lunar Receiving Laboratory, where the first astronauts returning from the Moon were quarantined, and where the majority of lunar samples are stored.

An ordinary day at work when a publicist comes in to talk to me - she tells me she has former astronaut Colonel David Scott across the road in a hotel for interviews with the Scottish press here in Edinburgh and would we like him to come over when he finishes and sign some copies of the book he has co-authored with cosmonaut Alexei Leonov? Let me think about that for an ato-second... YES!
I've been in love with the idea of space travel since I was a tiny boy - I was born at the height of the Space Race and Armstrong and Gagarin were my heroes as a kid (they still are, if I'm honest). And suddenly here in the middle of a normal working day I find myself chatting with one of those pioneers, shaking hands with a man who walked on the surface of another world, one of a tiny number who have been far enough into space to look back and see the entire globe of our world hanging in the void. Naturally I had to have one of those signed copies for myself.

In 1964 my late father, Beaudry Glen Pautz, accepted a job as Press Officer for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa. It was the start of the Cold War "space race", the CSIR collaborated with the Americans and Beau received a lot of space programme material and press kits from NASA. I still have most of those historic documents in my collection. Here's a selection of them.

Two Sides of the Moon by American astronaut David Scott and Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. This afternoon at the Edinburgh Film Festival I saw the UK premiere of the documentary "In the Shadow of the Moon" which covered that magnificent effort that was the Apollo programme. It reminded me of this book I have, signed by one of those select few humans who have walked on the Moon, David Scott, who appears in the film and is also involved in the making of it.
Both David and Alexei were on opposing sides of the Cold War and yet would work together in the 70s and become friends through space exploration. David commanded an Apollo mission while Alexei was the first man to walk in space (he would also have a starship named after him by the great Arthur C Clarke in the sequel to 2001). David was doing a meet the press junket in Edinburgh near my old bookstore, his publisher brought him across to out shop afterwards to sign some copies, so out of the blue that day I got to shake hands with an Apollo astronaut and get him to sign my book.

I filmed on Super 8 Film (before sound home cameras became common, so there is no sound) the live television coverage as it happened 40 years ago this week: lift off of Apollo 11, then Walter Cronkite's coverage of it on the Evening News July 16, 1969, lunar cruise broadcast showing the earth receding in size as Apollo 11 got closer to the Moon July 17, 1969, and landing countdown July 20, 1969.
