Note that lack of information concerning the nature of the lunar surface, at that time, resulted in the inclusion of an "impact spike" on the landing stage, to anchor the vehicle in a vertical position, no matter what the composition of the surface.

Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11's LEM's brief visit to the Sea of Tranquility. During the two hours and thirty six minutes that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were on the surface, they carried out a radio-telephone call with President Richard Nixon. During that phone call, they lined up next to the flag they'd erected and Armstrong saluted the President, seen on TV around the world. Original video still here.

It was 42 years ago today that the world heard the words "Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed".

In this shot, a Lunar Lander mock-up sits among several of the flying machines that preceded it and contributed to its development and the landing on the moon, and many flying machines that were its contemporaries.

Second of a three-frame minipan taken by David Scott of the Station 9 crater bench, prior to leaving. The small, fresh crater is located about 100 meters east of Hadley Rille. The crater is filled with blocks of compacted soil, known as regolith breccia or "instant rock".

Although it is tempting to think that the break in slope represents the point at which the impactor encountered basaltic bedrock beneath the overlying regolith, that explanation is unlikely because Dave and Jim found no basaltic ejecta from this crater.

In 1964 my late father, Beaudry Glen Pautz, accepted a job as Press Officer for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa. It was the start of the Cold War "space race", the CSIR collaborated with the Americans and Beau received a lot of space programme material and press kits from NASA. I still have most of those historic documents in my collection. Here's a selection of them.

This is the actual hatch from Apollo 11 command module Columbia and is exhibited separately from the capsule itself. I snapped a photo of my daughter in the same pose, and couldn’t help but get her to give me a rare selfie in the same way...

This hatch, the Columbia, and a bunch of other lunar landing mission artifact are part of a limited, traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, called Destination Moon.
