Today was another rough Friday. I had to say goodbye to many friends from ILM, and LucasArts that were kind enough to visit a makshift studio for a quick portrait before they left the building. I can't thank you all enough for being so patient, and for allowing me to capture your portraits today. It was so great getting to know the LucasArts family that I've never met before, and see some ILM faces that I've not seen in years. For those of you that are leaving, you will be missed, and I hope to some day work along side you again!
This will be the growing collection of portraits from both LucasArts, and ILM, and all of the amazingly talented people that were under the roof of LDAC.
The Letterman Digital Arts Center (LDAC), located in the Presidio, has been the combined home of Industrial Light & Magic, LucasArts, and Lucasfilm Limited since June 25, 2005. The $350-million, 850,000-square-foot center sits on a 23-acre lot and is home to 1500 employees. The grounds were designed by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, who also restored San Francisco's Ghirardelli Square. The design architect for the buildings was Gensler, and architect of record was HKS, Inc. The lobby of Building B is open to the public during regular business hours and contains a gallery of Lucasfilm memorabilia.
Here, I'm building props at the Presidio offices of Lucasfilm. There are still screws fragments melted into the carpet of this conference room. Sorry George!
My 1:18 scale, 4.5" tall Furlag sculpt is complete. The head is a completly original sculpt. The figures body is also original and is sculpted over a custom created, articluated frame. I used Aves FIXIT for the sculpt and casted the head in plastic. Furlag has 14 points of articulation. Hand painted using Testors Polyscale (Floquil) acrylic paints. A very unique species in the Star Wars universe...
From Wookipedia - "Furlag was a small-time bounty hunter with large, batlike ears. Operating during the height of the Galactic Empire, he was not well-known, but often worked with other prominent bounty hunters, such as Zuckuss and 4-LOM. He, Zuckuss, and 4-LOM were subcontracted by fellow hunter Skorr on Ord Mantell during the early Galactic Civil War in the hunt for a group of prospective Rebels, then again later with 4-LOM and Zuckuss as well as several other bounty hunters including the Trandoshan Bossk to attempt to pry Han Solo's carbonite-encased body from Boba Fett."
Unfortunately Furlag underestimated Boba Fett and met his end being sucked through and open airlock shaft into deep space.
Sam and Max is a multi-media franchise that debuted as a comic strip in 1980, saw publication as a comic book in 1987, was released as a LucasArts game, Sam & Max Hit the Road, in 1993, and became a television cartoon series on Fox in 1997.
The comic was originally created by Dave Purcell, who eventually sold the rights to his older brother, Steve Purcell, who, as a student at California College of Arts and Crafts, had the strip run in the weekly school paper. In 1988, Steve went to work at LucasArts as an illustrator, where he created cover art for Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island 1 & 2, and drew a Sam and Max based cartoon for the Adventurer, a quarterly LucasArts newsletter. In 1993, LucasArts approved the development of a Sam and Max game. Throughout, Purcell retained the rights to the Sam and Max franchise.
Neither Sam & Max Plunge Through Space, developed at Infinite Machine (a startup founded by ex-LucasArts employees), nor Sam & Max Freelance Police at LucasArts, were ever released. The license for the franchise moved to Telltale Games after the LucasArts license expired in 2005.
Telltale releases episodes of each game on a regular schedule, with each game comprising five or six episodes.
I have completed the sculpt to this version of Starkiller from The Force Unleashed 2 - Arena Combat Gear. Next the figure will be primed then painted. Figure is in 1:18 scale sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt - a two part epoxy. Also includes casted materials and fabric.
Much more detail to the head this week - also worked on the upper arms. I feel the detail is going to be enormous with this figure once completed...and with a full range of articulation? Awesome! I'm looking forward to beginning the chest cavity.
However, many revisions need to take place before I am satisfied but I feel I am heading in the right direction. All Hail FIXIT SCULPT! I couldn't do this type of detail at this scale without it!
I hope these early images show you how much effort goes into creating these figures - probably the most difficult part of building one of these is the early stages, creating a working armature that will allow the articulation I want as well as support the sculpt work I intend to apply.

Straying from the path he has sturggled to hold true, Dass Jennir arrives on Telerath. Unbeknownst to Jennir, his destiny with the living force is about to be revealed and his burdened conscience wiped clean....
Dass Jennir is a favorite character of mine from the Star Wars Dark Horse Expanded Universe.
My apologies for taking so long to complete this piece...as with all my work, I never center my full attention on just one project, always a bit at a time, tabling and returning to the subject when the inspiration hits.
This is a 1:18th scale figure - fully articulated with all the basic movements, however some are a bit limited than others. Lets face it, I'm working with a "stone-like" epoxy, not as durable as plastic...but can be posed in many postions like other factory made figures...mostly when his cowl is removed.

I have been experimenting further with the Lucasart effect and my old HDRs. I quite like this one, but it's not perfect.

Here is the finished backlit poster box. The poster is an original theatrical double sided poster with Lucasarts watermark. It has been autographed by 16 celebs (with certificate of authenticity). You can make out some of the autographs on the poster in the picture. They are as follows: George Lucas, Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Christopher Lee, Samuel Jackson, James Earl Jones, Frank Oz, Amy Allen, Kenny Baker, Ahmed Best, Peter Mayhew, Ian McDiarmid, Jimmy Smits, Matthew Wood and John Williams.
Close to completion to the upper body of the cybernetic reconstruction. The upper chest and back, spinal column and tube placement have been completed - the tubes have been applied for test positioning only and will be removed when sculpting continues. The small circulatory tank just beow the chest has been added for positioning as well and will be attached permanently when sculpting and painting of the primary figure is complete. The head is close to completion but needs additional detail to the sides and back as well as a "vocoder". Will begin work on the lower arms, hands and two circulatory tanks for the figures interior as well as metal rib cage.

Completed "Stage 1" Malgus head sculpt as he appeared in the beginning of the Hope theatrical trailer. A second head sculpt will reveal battel damage and the third will include the respirator. I have also completed the detail to the neck.
The body may look a bit clumsy right now, but it all has a purpose.
Malgus will appear as he did from both Old republic theatrical trailers - He will include two alternate head sculpts. I am working on a trio of Imperial Troopers to go along with him :)
I hope these early images show you how much effort goes into creating these figures - probably the most difficult part of building one of these is the early stages, creating a working armature that will allow the articulation I want as well as support the sculpt work I intend to apply.
Completed Jedi Master Luke Skywalker as seen in issue #3 of Star Wars Invasion by Dark Horse Comics. Luke is in command of Republic forces sent to the planet Rychel in order to repel the invading forces of the Yuuzhan Vong.
The figure was mostly sculpted in Aves Epoxy FIXIT sculpt using a plastic articulated armature. The forearms and hands have been recasted from original parts. The head originalted from a Legacy Snowspeeder Luke figure, casted in wax and completly retooled and refined adding additional markings to the face, age lines, a lower brow, hair and ears...I also strengthened the jaw. The figure measures 3.75" in height. Painted using Floyquil Acrylics by testors.

From the Dark Horse comic series Knights of the Old Republic, written by John Jackson Miller, comes my completed Zayne Carrick as he appeared in part four of Commencement.
