The name of the village of Lower Slaughter stems from the Old English name for a wet land 'slough' or 'slothre' (Old English for muddy place) upon which it lies. This quaint village sits beside the little Eye stream and is known for it's unspoilt limestone cottages in the traditional Cotswold style.
The stream running through the village is crossed by two small bridges and the local attraction is a converted mill with original water wheel selling craft type products.

The Niederrhein Origamitour (Lower Rhine Valley origamiride) started on a hot day in july 2006 on the Bahnhof in Emmerich.
There were 31 participants, which is a record.
We followed the dikes along the river Rhine and crossed a dam onto the island of Schenkenschanz. Here we had our first break.
The Island of Schenkenschanz is situated in the river Rhine and is now a nature reserve. This is the area where the Rhine is constantly seeking its way to the North Sea, meandering through its own alpine sediments.
In the late 16th century Schenkenschanz was an important fortress serving in the 80-years war between the catholic Spanish king Philip II and the protestant guerillas under the banner of William of Orange who tried to form an independent state.
From here the Dutch attaqued the Spanish troops in the easter parts of what would later become the Dutch Republic of the Seven Provinces.
During our break we could learn about the history thanks to informative texts and drawings exposed in the village.
After that we left the Island by a little bicycle ferry that could only hold about 10 cyclists at a time. Crossing The Rhine took 3 sailings and 45 minutes.
